Karly Hartzman is an Asheville, North Carolina-based musician and the leader of the highly acclaimed rock band Wednesday. The project started solo in 2017 and eventually morphed to include Jake Lenderman (aka MJ Lenderman) on guitar, Xandy Chelmis on lap steel, Alan Miller on drums, and Ethan Baechtold on the bass. Their 5th record, Rat Saw God, came out a few months ago and it’s one of my favorites of the year. It perfectly blends Karly’s intimate small town lyrics, vocals that range from a whisper to a scream, MJ’s special take on alt country twanginess, and a noisier rockin’ sound. Wednesday is kicking off a huge tour next year so be sure to snag tickets if they’re coming to a city near you. Karly also makes some insanely sick handmade merch that’s available for purchase on prisondivorcebombshell.com. Lucky for us, Karly is here to tell us what she’s been into.

The only thing that has helped me feel like a human being after touring. Especially cause I got hypothyroid and my shit is constantly out of whack regardless of the insanity that is “the road”. I like that it ties in emotional and physical pain so deeply, cause I got both of em (who doesn’t).
👻👾
It’s funny cause I’m too scared to actually play most of the games, I watch other people play them on Youtube. I’m just obsessed with the storytelling you can do with this medium. Especially sick if the game is made by just one obsessed person. My favorite of all time is Sally Face. But I’ve also watched a ton of Silent Hill and Fear and Hunger playthroughs.

Thought I was always gonna be a gal who looks just okay in hats. But then I realized I just needed a big ass hat for my big ass head. Much hotter on me than your run of the mill hat (on me at least).
🪄❤️🩹
Instead of getting cover ups on top of shitty tattoos I got when I was 18, I’ve just been doing another tattoo on top of it instead. I like the way it looks so much more and also kinda reminds me that it’s okay to not be the same person I was years ago, and I don’t ever wanna lose those versions of myself completely.
🌿🥾
I live in a mountain town where hiking is HUGE. Not my favorite activity though, and I’ve really enjoyed saying no to hiking. I can see mountains and trees and cool shit from my front porch. I don’t really wanna drive an hour to hike up another mountain and look at other mountains.

I read plenty of books that make me feel more developed as a human being, and help extend my worldview and knowledge. I’ve decided however, that when I’m on tour I wanna read shitty fun books cause I don’t have a ton of bandwidth for anything too serious. So I’ve been reading “A Court of Thorns and Roses” series by Sarah J. Maas. Extremely entertaining stuff.
