Aly & AJ reveal their favorite spot for froyo in Topanga Canyon

Aly & AJ are a Los Angeles-based music duo made up of sisters Aly and AJ Michalka, known for early-2000s hits like “Potential Breakup Song.” This Perfectly Imperfect is especially meaningful to me– “Chemicals React” was the very first song I ever downloaded onto my very first iPod, and I’ve always seen the pair as two of the coolest girls in the world. Their debut album turns 20 this August, and to celebrate, a special live vinyl release is on the way. Their newest album, Silver Deliverer, dropped last week– you can check it out here. The duo also has some festival appearances lined up this summer, with a fall tour in the works. Lucky for us, Aly and AJ are here to tell us what they’ve been into.

Radio Flyer Wagon

My Dad gave my son a radio flyer wagon for Christmas this past year and I love going on neighborhood rides with him. I fill it with pillows and blankets for extra cushioning since he’s on the little side but I’m excited for the day when he’s pulling it himself. -Aly

Clifford (movie starring Martin Short)

This movie is insanely underrated and completely unhinged. AJ & I hadn’t watched it since we were kids and we put it on the other night, only to be reminded of Martin’s comedic genius. The 2nd part of the movie goes a bit off the rails but I recommend watching this slightly stoned (if that’s your kinda thing) -Aly

Homebirths

I only became a true believer in homebirths after having one myself. The fact that I delivered him in water (in a blow up bathtub in my living room) & then had soup in my bed with my dogs after attests to the utter magic of it all. I did a lot of research & prep leading up to the day. Everything from Hypnobirthing classes, daily affirmations and meditations, pregnancy chiro, reading all the Ina May Gaskin books, and finding an amazing doula and midwife team. I’d do it all over again! -Aly

Laurel Canyon Cleaners

Been getting my clothes dry cleaned here since I moved to Laurel Canyon with my sister. I don’t even live in LA anymore and I STILL use them. This store is ran by two amazing women and has been family owned since 1963. I’m pretty sure that Joni Mitchell, Frank Zappa and Jim Morrison got their clothes dry cleaned here but I have no real proof of this. -Aly

Vintage Watches

I’m still a baby collector when it comes to the amount of watches I have but the collection is fire (if I do say so myself) and I believe in quality over quantity. I currently have 5 that I really love but my top 2 include my 1959 AP and my Patek from 1934. Eric Wind (my watch dealer and good friend) always finds me gems. Holy grails = JLC Reverso and a Vacheron Historique American 1921 -AJ

Canyon Gourmet

We made our upcoming album in Topanga Canyon with Jonathan Wilson and lived there together as a family over the course of a month (yes, it was heaven) Every day we’d get the frozen yogurt from the local country mart down the street and it’s truly the best froyo I’ve ever had. I prefer a swirl in case you were wondering. Not to mention, they source their produce from the Santa Monica farmers market and their bread from Gjusta. -AJ

Ancient Dogs

My Shih Tzu/Bichon mix is going to be 19 this year and I consider that pretty ancient. Her name is Willow and I’ve had her since I was 16. She even toured with us back in 2007. -AJ

Fuzzy head of a nephew

One of my favorite things these days is playing with my nephew’s hair. The hilarious thing is, the texture of the front and top is completely different than the back of his head which is all fuzz. He’s pure magic. -AJ
