Carmen Christopher is a Los Angeles-based comedian, writer, and actor whose comedic chops have left a mark on some of the best shows out right now. You might recognize him from The Bear, Search Party, I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson, and English Teacher, and he’s also written for shows like The Curse and Killing It. One of my all time favorite videos is Guys Day where he and Conner OMalley spend a day in Atlantic City - it's beautiful. His latest comedy special, Carmen Christopher: Live from the Windy City, is amazing and it's streaming now on YouTube (check it out here). Lucky for us, Carmen’s here to tell us what he’s been into.

The Chicago Bears

I’m obsessed with this football team. When they win I’m happy. When they lose my day is totally fucked. This past season was particularly tough. We lost like five games in the last few seconds. It was brutal. But the future is bright because we have Caleb Williams, a star QB who paints his fingernails. Growing up in Chicago my dad was a big Bears fan. He would throw shit at the TV and get pissed. It’s probably in my blood. I appreciate football because it’s a true team sport. All eleven guys on the field need to contribute in order to succeed. I was on my high school team and I rode the bench, but our team went 11-1 in both my junior and senior years. It was my first time being part of something successful. We once had a game where 10,000 people attended. The whole town shut down it was insane. CLTV helicopters were there. We were a small school, but a lot of our guys got college scholarships, and one guy went to the NFL. So uh yea, football rules (minus the CTE). Da Bears.

The Beach

I moved to LA from NY a few years ago, and I gotta say if you aren’t going to the beach you're an idiot! Most of us are an hour drive from some of the most beautiful beaches in the world! I hit all the beaches - and will even drive out to Laguna - IDGAF. I love going into the ocean, it makes me feel alive. When the water's calm I like to float and let my mind wander. I’ve come up with some of my best ideas out there. I also have been tumbled by some really strong waves - scary stuff - gotta respect the tide. The sun and the ocean really help me feel alive. If I’m bummed and I go to the beach, the next day I always feel better. It’s magic - we are a species that needs sun! Buy an umbrella if you don’t like the sun and just stare at the ocean. It’s beautiful. I’ve seen dolphins and whales many times in California. Bring a cooler and throw out your trash. Sorry to be such an environmentalist.

Mexico City

I know it’s become really popular for Americans to travel to Mexico City, but my grandparents are from there, so stay off my ass. The first time I went was after my grandparents passed and it helped me feel a deeper connection to them and with the city. It’s beautiful and huge (6th largest city in the world!). Most tourists just spend time in Roma Norte and Condesa and they are amazing neighborhoods, but there’s so much outside of those towns. The very least you could do is go to the Teotihuacan Pyramids, spend a day in the historic center, and stop being a little b and eat some crickets. They are really high in nutrients. Much more sustainable than eating any meat! Check out as many Diego Rivera frescos as you can (ask someone near you the meaning behind them). There are lots of free walking tours that are pay by donation. There are a lot of really nice restaurants, but you can have some of the best tacos you’ve ever eaten for just a dollar. If you ask the locals their favorite tacos everyone has a different answer, because there are too many great options. I hope to go to Mexico City at least once a year.

Homemade Rice Krispie Treats

Stop fucking around and put some marshmallows in your system. Stop buying that store-made shit. Rice Krispie treats are a perfect snack. Give some to your neighbors and friends, they’ll be grateful. You don’t know how much you love these until you make them at home. They're also super easy to make. They’ll turn on your lover too. You might be in store for the best sex of your life.

Picking up the damn phone

Stop texting so much. Call your friend, or anyone. A phone call can be so much faster and efficient. Especially when you’re trying to make plans. There’s so much communication that’s lost when you don’t hear someone’s tone. Listen, I was a salesman before I worked in the entertainment biz and I spent eight hours a day on the phone. Cold calling. It was disgusting. But if there’s anything I learned, it’s that if you want to close a deal it starts with picking up the phone.
