DJ_DAVE

👩🏼‍💻Asking the internet, 🎮 Using games as meditation, 🎶Strudel.REPL, and more.

DJ_Dave is a Los Angeles-based producer and DJ. She’s one of the most notable Algorave artists out there– known for her super sick live-coded DJ sets. She is quite literally dropping bangers at “the intersection of art and technology” (check out my favorite track). She’s also toured with artists like Danny Brown, and made fire remixes for artists like Uffie and Tove Lo. This fall, she collaborated with DadaBots on an infinite remix + live stream (infinite as in “ONE BIG REMIX FOREVER” and you can find the live stream here) for Naive, a song she released with Sipper. She also tells us she’s starting LiveCodeLA, inspired by the New York-based live coding collective Livecode.nyc. You can explore her Davescography here. Lucky for us, DJ_Dave is here to tell us what she’s been into.

Using games as meditation

When I was younger I used to be able to spend HOURS playing random internet games, like I would just get lost in them and not think about anything else outside of the game. That’s probably not the best way to spend your time when you’re a kid, but as an adult I’ve realized it’s kind of a way to meditate. It’s an opportunity to be present and take a break from thinking about anything, and it’s so easy to get lost in it.

Being able to grow your own food for free is just the craziest concept. I also have some doomsday prepper DNA in me and gardening satisfies that need for self-sufficiency lmao. My girlfriend’s mom told me recently that plants have survival instincts too, so when you grow your own fruits and vegetables, they try to adapt to what you like so you’re less likely to get rid of them. So also that’s why food you grow yourself tastes so much better.

If you don’t know the answer, there’s a good chance someone else does. My musical process exists in a niche space, so for me specifically sometimes the best way to learn new things is to open my questions up to the internet. Like why not just put the question out there. It’s a direct portal to almost ANYONE in the world, what a useful tool.

I’ve realized it’s honestly hard for me to really be inspired by a song or artist without seeing them live. And vise versa – it’s rare for me to NOT be inspired by an artist I like after I’ve seen them perform live. I try to go to as many unique live shows as I can because I always leave feeling extremely energized and excited about what’s being created in the world.

I think in general it’s extremely important that everyone has a hobby, or at least something fun to do outside of work. Artists I’m talking to you too, because if your job is music or visual art, I think you should have something totally unrelated to that to do in your free time. For example, I've been working on a painting for my brother’s boss in my free time, and I’ve also been knitting a scarf! It doesn’t have to be anything crazy and definitely not profitable, but it really helps with separating work time from free time.

This one’s for my live coders out there ♡ I’ve been learning how to work in a new live coding environment called Strudel. It’s special because it’s web-based and has some cool integrations, and personally I also like it because its notation lends itself really well to unexpected outcomes.
