Gia Coppola is a Los Angeles based director and screenwriter. You might be familiar with her film Mainstream, or her directorial debut Palo Alto—a defining movie in my adolescence. Beyond filmmaking, Gia has collaborated with brands like Gucci, and directed music videos for some of our favorite artists here at Perfectly Imperfect, including Blood Orange and Yves Tumor. The Last Showgirl, her most recent—and Golden Globe nominated—film, starring Pamela Anderson, was released nationwide earlier this year and is now available to stream. Lucky for us, Gia’s here to tell us what she’s been into.

All his short documentaries are wild and hard to find. The gambling one was a big inspiration for me for The Last Showgirl. I felt like you’re able to see how the city can take hold of a person— unlike any other place. You see the people who come visit and the people who live there.

My uncle turned me onto this camera. It’s like $45, durable, and divides the film negative in half — so you get more “bang for your buck”. Especially now that film is so expensive.

I love to cook. Also calms my brain, I guess I need a lot of brain calming activities at the end of the day… Here’s one of my husband’s favorite recipes that’s easy for me to make and never seems to disappoint. No matter how many times I make the same thing, I never seem to be able to have it memorized. I still need to look at recipes.

I love a good audiobook. Especially a memoir. I’m currently listening to Cher’s. The only draw back is I don’t get to see the pictures. I love her Bob Mackie costumes and her raw honesty.

I miss my grandma. She was such an amazing woman and artist. Very introspective. I love the way she looked at life. She would always notice the small unusual details with so much gratitude. I love her conceptual art projects of the 70’s. She once made a map of store fronts around San Francisco, creating a sort of scavenger hunt gallery, proving that art is all around us. Years later, I took the map and photographed what the store fronts turned into…

Stray Cat Alliance LA is my home. I love LA. It’s the land of noir, golden movies, and contrasting architecture amongst the nature. It’s heartbreaking to see it going through such devastation. I think of all the animals and people who’ve lost their homes. My heart breaks. I love the Stray Alliance organization. They’re smaller but doing the good work and need help/supplies for their rescued cats. Let’s get the word out.

a great documentary — the only movie, in my opinion, that’s able to encapsulate LA.

I love these photos of Beverly Hills in the 80’s. Photography has always inspired. When I go to a museum I gravitate towards the photography section, more so than the other mediums. There’s something about freeing a moment in time that I could just stare at endlessly.

I’ve been wearing the same perfume for I think ten years now. It’s light and I feel weird without it
