Introducing Encyclopedia Brunettica: a new column by Andrea Mauri

Andrea Mauri (@babedrea33) is an NYC-based image maker and Instagram story artist. Her visual practice is informed by her archaeological graduate studies at Cornell University, which centered around ancient Andean celebrations (“party archaeology”) and Incan sacrificial rituals. She currently archives Cronenbergian images on her blog (shared with her sister) I Hate War Mag and creative directs for electronic pop duo Frost Children.
Encyclopedia Brunettica platforms the colorful worlds of brunettes and, occasionally, their blonde best friends. Each month, babedrea33 will pour you a little cup of this brunette’s tea.
This month’s issue explores all things hand-drawn, as many brunettes are known for their drawings and more.

There aren’t many surviving pre-Hispanic Mixtec manuscripts since the Spanish conquistadores destroyed most indigenous records during their conquests. Luckily, the Codex Zouche-Nuttall (made up of 47 leaves of deer hide!) did survive, leaving us with a fabulous record of the life and times of 11th century elite Lord 8-Deer (also nicknamed Jaguar Claw). Most famously, Lord 8-Deer achieved the difficult feat of uniting the 3 main kingdoms of the Mixteca region. In this scene, Lord 8-Deer can be seen getting his nose pierced in the bottom left.

The first time that I ever heard Takkyu Ishino, I was browsing /bleep/ and happened to stumble upon his music video for Polynasia. My mind was subsequently = to blewn and Polynasia is now my all time favorite music video. Ishino is a Japanese DJ, producer, and a member of Denki Groove who rose to prominence in the late 90s. This is the artwork from his 1999 EP anna~letmein letmeout.

Anthropomorphic airplane fetish art has a bustling home on Deviantart thanks to artists like Sharkplane77. Think Cars universe, but for airplanes, and sometimes with a lot more raunchy themes. It reminds me in a way of the common artwork motif from the ancient Moche world: the revolt of the objects. You might also recognize Sharkplane77’s artwork from Marjorie -W.C. Sinclair’s 2025 single Airliner Tycoon.
