JOHN GLACIER

John Glacier finds peace sitting on the grass in the sun

John Glacier is a London-based poet, rapper, and producer who you might be familiar with from collaborations with Surf Gang and Vegyn, or Daniel Lee's debut Burberry campaign, which featured her and her poetry. She began self-producing and uploading music online in the late 2010s, and projects like SHILOH: Lost For Words have since established her as a rising force in London’s experimental music scene. If you missed her performance at C2C Festival last week, make sure to check out her debut studio album, Like a Ribbon, released earlier this year on the YOUNG label. It’s an exceptional project that feels unlike anything else out right now, featuring appearances from artists like Eartheater and Sampha. Lucky for us, John’s here to tell us what she’s been into.

Because they’re pretty. A good tree can come in many forms. It could be bare, just the branches. Or flowering, or with leaves. I saw one the other day that looked like barbed wire. My favourites are in Jamaica, but the good thing about photographing trees is they could be anywhere.

It’s peaceful. I enjoy nature generally. When I was in Scotland recording, there was some beautiful moss. I love the scent of moss. Intoxicating.

We haven’t seen them in a long while in London but this year we can. I don’t know why people aren’t more appreciative. We don’t know if we’ll get them next year.

I love the changes of the seasons. Now the flowers are blooming again. The album is made up two out of three EPs and reflects the seasons and some specific flowers in Jamaica. The EP Duppy Gun has a dangerous name but it’s very harmless and beautiful Angels Trumpet EP is the opposite. I was sitting beneath one in Jamacia and ever since I saw it I knew I’d have a project with that name.  It sounds delicate and harmonious but it’s poisonous. Which is why it’s on the left side of the album artwork.

My family takeaway. They’re about to re-open their shop but they’re currently on Petticoat Lane Market on Galston Street with a trailer. Oxtail and the Curry Goat is the must try. They also do the jerk chicken on the grill. Get it 10000%. They did the food at my album launch at Young Space.
