LORDE

Lorde on finding inspo via Perfectly Imperfect

Lorde is a New York–based, Grammy-winning singer and songwriter. She rose to fame as a New Zealand teenager with her debut album Pure Heroine, and has since headlined multiple international tours and released two more critically acclaimed albums, voice of a generation-style. From her feature on Charli XCX’s Brat to her spring charting single “What Was That,” Lorde continues to cement her status as one of the most influential musicians of her generation. Her highly anticipated and, in her own words, “cool, weird little” album Virgin drops June 27. Until then, check out the video for her latest single, “Man of the Year.” Tickets for Lorde’s Ultrasound World Tour, featuring support from PI alumni like Chanel Beads, Oklou, and Nilüfer Yanya, are on sale now, with remaining seats available here. Lucky for us, she’s here to share what she’s been into.

We’re conditioned now to try grab it all and grow without limit and it’s making us feel sick. Let something of value pass you by this week. Even better if it feels wrong to do so/presses into an uncomfy spot. See if the feeling you’re craving can be achieved using tools you have. It’s extremely honourable to operate one beloved restaurant and never open any more, success doesn’t have to mean becoming shake shack (although I do like shake shack).

Are you taking fruit for granted? I was. Orbs of sweetness and vitality that come in their own wrapper and can be enjoyed wherever. I highly recommend eating fruit in bed with someone you’re kissing. Naked maybe. It’s sexy

I have read Perfectly Imperfect for many years and have benefited greatly from this generous source of inspo. A couple big hitters in my life: “a little tray by the bed” I can’t remember whose this was in but containing your bedside crap on a nice tray feels really good. Honor levy’s PI also reminded me about Unicode characters and I use them whenever something’s feeling too tidy and frictionless and a little detritus is needed.

My friend Chelsea gave me this printer, it’s inexpensive and works well. It connects to an app on your phone and prints any image in black and white on regular or sticker paper. For a period in late 2023/early 2024 I had to travel everywhere with this printer and would go on huge benders printing out like 50 images. You can make an insane card with it or take it to a party. For a while I was contemplating getting an office in New Zealand and my best friend Fran was like “For what purpose? To house your tiny printer?”

I started doing this in a period when I was experiencing deep confusion about who I was. I found being in a hat or sweatshirt with some signifiers specific to me or an idea I wanted to live by that day pinned me down and pumped me up. I use Jonathan Embroidery Plus in the garment district but most malls have a stand that offers this service. Embroidery is expensive but I think cements the idea best.

Preferably to a theatre close to your house. It has a very cool dreamy feeling like you’re still at home and makes the movie hit deeper. Dried fruit, nuts, chocolate chips, cookies, crackers etc. Sweet and savoury all in one bag is nice. Enjoy being surprised by your favourites in the dark.

Keeping a direct line open to one’s ancestors is I think a very effective way of not falling off the face of our earth. This could be facilitated by a piece of family jewelry or a photo/painting of/belonging to an ancient in your line. Warning sometimes these objects can get a bit charged and you gotta maybe light a candle and open a window and be like I know, I’m listening, thank you. For me remembering that I am a small sapling from many redwoods helps me feel looked out for and like if i take a big swing and miss they will still love me.
