This column drops during a historic run — eight Jonathan Richman shows in 4 days at Baby’s. Told Alex I’d be requiring list +1 for each & every one of them. I see the residency as sort of a send-off present from him to me. It’s not. But I’ll miss the boy dearly when he sets sail, and these shows gave me something to look forward to when I really needed it.
I’m tryna start looking forward more. This list is part of that. There’s a lot going on, & warmer days ahead. Hope you’ll rock with me.
Here are some events I’m intrigued by in the coming weeks.

“it is spooky isn't it” Lydia Lunch - Idk the details but I know she’s goated. A good opportunity to study up. Steve Earle - Probably wouldn’t dedicate a full Friday night to this one, but I love Galway Girl. Jonathan Richman - Mandatory. Non-negotiable. See you there.

Ben Special - I’ve admired Ben’s songwriting since I was 19. Saw him first in Boston with Forth Wanderers / Horse Jumper of Love / Adult Mom [ Bruce Hamilton era ] / Brittle Brian. The show started at noon and finished by 3 pm. But I kept thinking about it forever. It’s been special (fuck) seeing his sound evolve over the years. I’ll always be listening. Jonathan Richman - Major shoutout to Tommy “Less is More” Larkin. Excited to see what kinda swag he hits us with this weekend. Check my synopsis from last time.

Some Velvet Sidewalk - I saw this clip when I was a kid & it never left my mind. Flying Fish - Pretty sure this dude is like 16. Or at least he was at some point. Very sick. Jonathan Richman - Fourth and final day of his residency. I’ll spare you the full-scale geeking. But I’m anticipating this will be both personally historic, & historically historic.

Liz Pelly - Haven’t read the book but I co-sign wholeheartedly. My Transparent Eye - Should be a real solid Monday night sesh. Easing back into the week. Tip Peter if he's behind the bar — I’ve been sleeping on his couch.

I’m not rlly a Little Monster. But I’d love to see what she’s up to. Hoping to solidify a healthy, mutually-beneficial working relationship with MSG. Cuz I also wanna catch Cardi B at the end of the month.

The Alaskas - Just went to a show at Arlene’s Grocery & promised myself I’d avoid it at all costs. But if The Alaskas are playing … Clem Burke memorial - This one is fascinating to me. Features members of Blondie, The Fall, Sex Pistols, & more. I’m just realizing now that Bowery Electric closed & rebranded as Bowery Palace. Hell of a spot for a memorial. Grimlitter - On my list.

Autobahn, x PARKiNG x etc - Hoping we’ll be locked in to some real springtime energy by this point. A rock show at Union Pool. You know the drill. I’ll prolly get a fish taco + a Carlsberg tall boy & hide alone on the patio for at least half the night. aLex vs aLex x Anysia Kim x Mackeeper x Corridos Ketamine x Windy 500 x etc - Just met aLex vs aLex @ Baby’s. Just ran into MacKeeper somewhere. Not certain where.

LUCY x Mal Devisa x CCLCNG (MA, 3/13) - Mal Devisa played my first DIY show ever. And LUCY has been my favorite artist for 9 yrs now. This show’s in the party room of a bowling alley in Western Mass. A tough one to miss. TAGABOW x Big Nick x Raskol x The Damage (Philly, 3/14) - Idk Ethan or Reina but I’d be thrilled to help celebrate their wedding. Especially with bands like these. Open Letter x Lone Fir Cemetery x Catammonia x Fulsails (LA, 3/14) - Idrk Open Letter either but they seem like chillers via a handful of Instagram DMs. Tryna scheme some next level fuckery in Vegas down the line.
