The Hard Quartet

The Hard Quartet is a New York City-based supergroup composed of Stephen Malkmus (Pavement), Emmett Kelly (Bonnie Prince Billy / Ty Segall alum), Matt Sweeney (Chavez), and Jim White (Dirty Three). With a group this lush in indie rock luminaries, it comes as no surprise their debut would be this strong– this summer, The Hard Quartet put out their first single Earth Hater, a sick track accompanied by a great video directed by Eyedress. Last Friday, their self-titled debut album was released and this month, the band makes their live show debut in Los Angeles, New York and London; you can find your tickets here. Lucky for us, The Hard Quartet’s here to tell us what they’ve been into.

The block where DeKooning, Rothko & Kerouac made their names in the 1950’s features this decades-old Chinese ice cream parlor. A sugar cone with 2 scoops of their Orange Creamy ice cream will destroy any notions of comfort you ever had. Violently mellow flavors in a heavenly room.- Matt

there is music and there not music and everything there is in between is sort of encased in the shadow ring like a beautifully broken piece of glass. - Emmett

The OG little East village Japanese comfort food spot further east on 10th Street has been chilling there for 23 years or so. It’s the dependable cozy, kind, neighborhoody zone- delicious noodles, curry, katsu and trad Japanese snacks, ideal for the easy date or the solo chiller. Their cheesy veggie gyoza are def a f’n thing. - Matt

Theres this approach I heard about where you treat your life like a dream in a psychoanalytic sense,  then everything that happens is a symbol. Hold your reality a bit loosely. Music is a dream and so are memories.- Jim

Swimming - regardless of the climate, once submerged you are reoriented with the climate to swim in, flap wings, flip paddles etc. under water the breathing becomes denser, coarser, heart pounds harder. Returning to dry land takes a moment to regain balance. - Emmett

Another sick basic thing to do in NYC rip around on those electric citibikes.. to me it’s like an amusement park ride. - Stephen

it’s great and it’s not stuff , it’s experiential but it’s not like eating a meal , you don’t have to consume it literally.- Jim

Picked up Grace Paley’s book “Enormous Changes At The Last Minute” and it left me in a new place with a new set of eyes and ears. Busted my mind open about what it is to love and live in New York City. Specific universal graceful upsetting pitch-perfect uplifting knockout voice. How come nobody told me about Grace Paley?? - Matt
