Hi, I’m Mapu, the writer behind the Substack publication Instead of Doomscrolling—a corner of the internet where you can join me on my journey of mindful media consumption. Over there, I share media roundups and curated media guides, but over here, I’ll be sharing the little things that bring comfort, purpose, and whimsy back into my life every single week. I hope you find some inspiration that sparks the curiosity to experience life beyond the algorithmic ways of the internet :)**

Every morning when I check the news, it seems like the end of the world is looming closer and closer. I look at my screen and see the same scenes from dystopian movies play out in real life, and it’s deeply unsettling. Of course, this is a biased, narrow, and fatalistic view of reality, because even when it feels like that, it doesn’t mean that this feeling is all there is. Consequently, I’ve found myself sulking and uninspired, thinking about the point of everything when things feel so dark, and I know creation is always more powerful than the destruction we’ve been witnessing as of late. That is why I made it a point this week to focus on the big picture again and find as many sources of inspiration as I possibly can, which I’m excited to share with you today.

Read Bread of Angels by Patti Smith

📖

This is her latest book, where she takes us on this wonderful, multi-faceted journey of fantasy, grief, divinity, creation, and love, as she recounts moments from childhood to the present day. I always gravitate toward Patti’s work when I’m feeling uninspired, because what better place to find creative sparks than the words of an artist. This book is filled with such rich and nourishing prose, but funnily enough, one of the simplest statements was the one that stuck with me the most: “One must discern between a dream and a calling”.
