Hi, I’m Mapu, the writer behind the Substack publication Instead of Doomscrolling—a corner of the internet where you can join me on my journey of mindful media consumption. Over there, I share media roundups and curated media guides, but over here I’ll be sharing the little things that bring comfort, purpose, and whimsy back into my life every single week. I hope you find some inspiration that sparks the curiosity to experience life beyond the algorithmic ways of the internet :)

I’ve never been big on New Year’s resolutions. I’m the type of person who loves planning while often not fulfilling said plans—daydreaming of a million possibilities to be then slapped in the face by real life. When I was younger, I used to create these elaborate lists of resolutions, and I genuinely think I spent more time making them than actually realizing them. After consecutively looking back at all the failed plans I set for myself a year prior, I decided to hold on to the wins I had instead, and what got me there. Wins to me are not necessarily major achievements, but rather the little things that brought me a sense of ease, presence, and fulfillment; here are some of the ones that I’m taking with me into next year.

This year, I began to take mindful media consumption seriously, and one of the most important parts of this process was subscribing to newsletters of the publications whose pieces I enjoyed. I have a separate email for newsletters so that I have this beautifully curated inbox, full of pieces to discover—especially in the mornings when I get the itch to scroll. This seemingly simple action was deeply transformative for me; not only was this the base from which I started my newsletter, but it broadened my horizons and cultivated my curiosity.  If you want to find some of the publications that I love, you can find them here and here :)
