Hi, I’m Mapu, the writer behind the Substack publication Instead of Doomscrolling—a corner of the internet where you can join me on my journey of mindful media consumption. Over there, I share media roundups and curated media guides, but over here, I’ll be sharing the little things that bring comfort, purpose, and whimsy back into my life every single week. I hope you find some inspiration that sparks the curiosity to experience life beyond the algorithmic ways of the internet :)**

Life has felt like an absolute wild ride lately, some very high highs and a lot of low lows. I hadn’t been able to make all of these feelings and experiences coexist because I had to accept that I cannot always be in control and that this duality—to a certain extent—is always going to be the baseline. I recently started reading The Waves by Virginia Woolf, having had it on my TBR for a long time. It actually came to me in a dream a few months ago. I’m sure I had seen it somewhere, so it made its way into my psyche, but I took it as a sign that this was going to be something important for me, and I was right. I believe this book arrived at the perfect time. It has been a reminder that we must learn to ride the waves as they come, which is exactly what this week’s recs have allowed me to do.

Read The Waves by Virginia Woolf

📖

This is a classic experimental novel following the intertwined soliloquies of six characters as they grapple with the death of their friend, which explores the fluidity of the self, the erosion of time, grief, and the connection to a universal collective consciousness. I’m about halfway through this book, but from the very first page, I knew this was going to be unlike anything I had ever experienced. It’s like poetry coming alive through the universal resonance of the world around us—it shatters and pieces together what the human experience entails.
