crazy fact about coca cola and gender: diet coke came first and coke zero was later created to be a calorie-free coke alternative for men. yes, literally. coke zero is just diet coke for men! diet coke, because of its association with diets and the overall marketing strategy, became seen as a feminine drink. well, obviously a Real Man wouldn’t drink a feminine diet soda! (in other words, diet coke was experiencing “gender contamination”) so, of course, coca cola had to find some way to appeal to (make money off of) men who would drink coke if it were calorie-free but wouldn’t touch diet coke. thus came the third main variation of coke, with a small flavor difference but very different marketing approach: coke zero. watch this diet coke ad and this coke zero ad from 2006 (one year after coke zero’s debut) and spot the differences! there’s some gender mixing in their ads but overall coke zero ads mostly have like sports and weird stuff, while diet coke ads are mostly leisurely and fun visuals so in many ways: yes, Diet Coke = Gurl and Coke Zero = Bruh (also… reminder that coca cola is on the official BDS boycott list!)

Coke Zero

Where do I even start with this crazy girl?! I filmed my show Overcompensating (coming soon to Amazon :)) this Summer in Toronto and NOTHING hit like a CZ! Coming back to the states has been devastating just for the sheer lack of Coke Zero at restaurants. Diet Coke is LOVELY… but there’s something about little miss CZ. I think there’s less aspartame? Don’t tell me I won’t look it up and I don’t wanna know! They have FOUNTAIN Coke Zero at the Cinemark in North Hollywood. I took down a big gulp of it the other night while my boyfriend fell asleep next to me in a reclining chair watching Gladiator 2. That’s a dream night for me!

For a long time I fell for the Diet Coke lobby propaganda but Coke Zero is far better. A mini can is such a nice treat with lunch or dinner.
