When I was 7 years old I sat down in what I think was the children's section of the library near my school. I had a giant book in my hands, and by giant I don't mean it had a lot of pages, but it was just very wide and long to hold. It started off very liminal, just giant pictures that filled the page. There was a person in the shadows, and they were trying to get away from a larger creature- everything was black and white and they escaped through a crack or opening in the wall. They appear in this large cityscape, where you can see the entire city in one shot, with buildings stacked on eachother and an almost doctor suess feel about them. Now we have color, and we see kind but strange people, with unusual fruits and alarming pets. I don't think a single word was uttered throughout the entire book. What is this books name?!?! Was it even real?? It feels like a fever dream but I know I'm not making this up- but I've been searching for it for years with no luck. Help!! All I know is the drawing style was similar to this I think??

Iβm cleaning up my book shelf and this is one book from childhood I always keep around. A sad book with beautiful illustrations. I should re-read it.

these are all kinda books i enjoyed during my late elementary school years:
the fog diver series by joel ross β i had a fascination with steampunk things as a child and this let me dive headfirst into the thick of it
tales from outer suburbia by shaun tan β or anything shaun tan for that matter. his art is incredible and daydreaming with his works was such fun. i used to take this book out of my elementary school library almost every week just to stare at the pages
a tale dark and grimm by adam gidwitz β silly and spooky. perfect! and the other two books are just as marvellous :)
the last wild by piers torday β i think it was a book of the year in my school and i ate up story time.

I wanted desperately to move out and had a weird dream of working in a record store
I'm a puppeteer now, which I feel encompasses a lot of what I wanted to be, working my way up to a lead position right now.
I did move out, but couldn't handle it and moved back with my dad, and I feel like I've failed to live up to my childhood dreams in a sense.
Might move out again soon if I get this lead position (pleasepleaseplease)
