I suspect those born after the 2000's didn't experience this, I technically shouldn't have experience it but I had a friend that was like 3 years older than me growing up. Long story short she gave me a black jelly bracelet and told me I couldn't break it or take it off or else the sexual meaning associated with the color would come true. I was literally A CHILD so I was TERRIFIED. I don't remember what happened after that but I wanted to talk about jelly bracelets and how unique to the 90's they were.
A little back story:
Jelly bracelets (also known as jellies, gummies, shag-bands, or f*ck-bands) were popularized in the 1980's by Madonna due to her style of wearing jelly accessories and shoes. This trend continued along the 90's and even became revived in the 2000's. The bracelets were used almost like friendship bracelets as many would swap the jelly bracelets with each other. All while these bracelets waned in and out of popularity, the teens of these times decided to attach sexual meanings to the different colors of the bracelets. Many of the popular meanings include Yellow = hugging/kissing; Purple = French kissing; Pink = love-bite/flashing; Red = lap dance; Blue = oral; Brown = oral-anal; Black = "all the way"; Gold = "everything symbolised by all the other colours.
It was even reported that in October of 2003 Alachua Elementary School, Florida banned "sex bracelets" due to rumours of their sexual meanings and the use of sexual language among young children.
Anyway, long story short this little trend continued until around the early 2010's due to the medias obsession with blowing this story and fear mongering, keeping parents scared and horrified that their children were engaging in such games. Its important to note, however, that the meaning behind these braceletes were more myth than anything official and actually a lot of children and teens knew absolutely nothing about the meanings.
It sounds dumb but I love being able to have a personal connection to this dumb fad even though I was so young. I feel like stupid trends like these will never happen again due to the new generations dee connection with the internet and social media. Ofc, maybe its better that shit like this doesn't exist anymore but one can argue the younger generation are being subjected to much worse with unsupervised internet access.
