That said, I'm not sure that late-period Talk Talk gets enough credit for how soul-baringly sad and lonesome it is. Blood Meridian by Cormac Mccarthy

It's a western, but it's more relentlessly grim and ferociously cruel than any horror novel I've ever read. The very same reasons I think Robert Eggers (The VVitch) and Ari Aster (Hereditary) have made some of the best horror films since The Exorcist (1973).
