#242: Café Forgot

This is not something I talk about but I haven’t had a full length mirror in my home for like three years. Well, there’s one in my sister's room that I use for emergencies / special occasions but I’ve really grown to love no full length mirror. It didn’t start out as a choice because it stemmed more from being kind of lazy and broke but now it feels more like a selfcare thing. It's funny since I love clothes and outfits. Obviously, since I own a store. But I spend so much time around mirrors at work that it’s nice to have a break when I'm home. I also think that when I get up in the morning without a full length mirror in my room I choose cute clothes that I like that feel fun and chill and comfortable on my body.

I’m addicted to Sudoku and have been for the past six months. My favorite thing is when the day is done and the TV is on and I'm working on a sudoku with my two cats next to me. Pure bliss. I don't like ordering things online and sudoku is actually really hard to find in stores. It's not at drug stores or regular bookshops like you'd expect. You can always find it at the airport or at like Iconic Magazines on mulberry st.

Fresh or dried. Never canned. There are many varieties but my favorites in the fall are barlotti, cannellini, and red lentils. Barlotti don’t break down and so they are nice in a brothy soup with some greens, carrots and herbs. Cannellini are nice for a white bean soup with hearty roughage. Red lentils transform into the most delicious silky stew. Boil and then simmer beans in salted water with bay leaves, olive oil, and spices.

I went to a preseason basketball game like a month ago and it was a spiritual experience. I am the opposite of a sports person but I was invited to go last minute with front row seats or i think there was a different word used. I had just gotten over covid and was feeling like i needed to seize the day and say yes to things after being cooped up for a week. Everyone was in such a good mood and being so positive in the stadium. I felt like I was in a spaceship which I really love. Also I love teamwork.

I'm super attracted to writer, actor, producer Mike white. It’s really intense. My feelings. White Lotus is a great show obvi, but Enlightened with Laura Dern is maybe my fave show. Mike White wrote it and also plays a nice incel in it. But I really adore him when he's being himself on Survivor in 2018. Hes so cute and smart and bisexual.

When I first saw sliding doors when I was 12 it blew my mind. It’s like my fight club. Actually better than fight club in my opinion because it’s for girls. It’s kind of like one of those early 2000s rom coms with an element of fantasy, but it’s way better than “what women want” or “shallow hal,” No offense to those movies. To me, sliding doors is about how we have zero clue what’s good for us. It makes me happy that I have so little control over my life. Things I may think I really want, like getting somewhere on time or holding onto a relationship, may be totally wrong.

I’m not good at describing tastes and am certainly not a foodie but I want to talk about the beverage TÖST because it’s important. Basically TÖST feels trés sophisticated. It doesn't have alcohol in it but it is still celebratory and special. Delightful, delicious and bubbly lol. It's not too sweet but also isn’t trying to mimic the taste of alcohol. it's doing its own thing. It comes in a beautiful bottle and is a great thing to bring to a dinner party, especially if I am at the dinner party. I think i discovered it when i was exploring my favorite overpriced supermarket in Fort Greene, greene grape (temporarily closed! 😔) but you can find it at whole foods i believe.

I have an affinity for period pieces. Some of my favorites are by Merchant and Ivory—A Room with A View, Maurice, and Howards End. I also love Peter Greenaway’s The Draughtsman's Contract, Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon. Perceval Le Gallois by Eric Rohmer is also very intriguing. It feels more like filmed theater than veritable cinema but is definitely worth the watch. La Religieuse is fantastic, both the 1966 version by Jacques Rivette and the 2013 remake by Guillaume Nicloux. I feel like I was just reading somewhere that period films typically do very well in the box office so maybe I'm just preaching to the choir here but what can you do?????

In virtually any weather at any speed walking from downtown to midtown is one of my favorite activities. If you are bored it’s just a really nice activity to do by yourself or with a friend. It's really meditative, you see neighborhoods change and can look at all these different things on the way. There are some fun places to stop on the way, like Kaluystayans and Dover Street Market or the Morgan Library. Once I arrive in midtown I like going to the Paris Theater, The Grill, or Ice skating in central park. MoMA can be fun too.

My favorite philosopher du jour. I’m just really a huge fan. I’ll let you look him up if you are interested. That way I don’t annoy you with an unintelligible description of Harmon’s object oriented ontology (OOO).

Utterly obsessed with Kirsty Godso (KG), and her workouts. Perfect for at home. 30 minutes of exercise that is actually so efficient. Really gets you into shape if you do it like 3 times a week. You can find these on the nike training club app. She also teaches some skyting classes which are fun.
