Lucy Bull is a New York-born, Los Angeles based painter and curator best known for her dreamlike abstract paintings. She had her first solo show in NY last fall and her next show, titled “Venus World”, opens at the Long Museum in Shanghai on June 9th. David Kordansky Gallery recently published a beautiful collection of her work from 2019-2022 that I’m currently flipping through as I write this. Bull also curates shows in unexpected places under @fromthedeskoflucybull- most recently, she presented a chandelier sculpture by Alexandra Metcalf in her Prius. Lucky for us, Lucy is here to tell us what she’s been into.

When I was walking around Madrid, I happened across the bookstore for the publishing house M. Moleiro. They reproduce illuminated manuscripts from the 6th-14th century, along with study books in multiple translations, and they’re unbelievably beautiful.

I live for the sauna and ice plunge combo. It’s my favorite way to de-stress. City Spa is my fave - they have the hottest rock sauna in LA and they are coed on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. When I want something more serene, I go to Olympic in Ktown. Their steam room is cut with mugwort and their deep sea facial will make you look five years younger.
🫦🎶
I would be remiss to not mention Miharu Koshi. Her music crosses genres, so depending on your mood there’s always some Koshi that will hit the mark. Her vocals are coquettish and perfect for getting you in the mood to do anything. Many albums are produced by Haruomi Hosono, including my electro favorite Tutu (1983). I also love the more jazzy/chanson Madame Crooner (2013).

Spotify’s year end wrap told me I’m in the top .01 percentile of Yokota listeners… There’s loads of texture to his music, so I fall into spells listening to his albums on repeat in studio. It’s impossible to narrow it down to a mere favorite (there’s really so much range…) but 1998 (1998) and Plantation (1995) were my most played this past year. That said, if you’re looking for dreamy wonderland, Sakura (1999) and Symbol (2004) are absolutely perfect.

It gives me so much joy to wake up bathed in hospital green sheets/the color of this soap emoji. It’s hard to find colors that aren’t pale but you can usually find them on clearance. Look for percale cotton.

I used to do pour-over every morning but last year I finally caved and bought a pistachio-colored Moccamaster and never looked back. It brews a damn fine cup of coffee.
