Chanel Beads is a New York City-based electronic project including Shane Lavers and Maya Collette. We’re presenting a very special show with live performances from Chanel Beads and Strange Ranger on Saturday (6/17) TICKETS HERE! Their 2022 single “Ef” (which I already raved about on “t-recs”) is one of my favorite tracks right now and I find myself smiling ear-to-ear whenever I see it live. They’re making some of the best music in the city right now and I can’t wait to see where they go from here. Lucky for us, Shane and Maya are here to tell us what they’ve been into.

I’ve been doing this instead of running. Makes me feel like a citizen. But it takes a few hours a day to really get the walker’s high.

Often I am laughing out loud. I hate thinking about punctuation. “Lol” and “haha” are perfect replacements for commas and periods

I guess not having a lot of family or guardianship, I’ve found a lot of wisdom and guidance in friendships from different age groups. People who have nurtured my empathy, broadened my understanding, and provided access to unique experiences. Even outside of deep friendships, just interacting more with different generations in a community is important to me.

I think his short stories shine brighter than his longer stuff. His essay “The lucky dog pet store“ is also very impactful. I revisit that one when I need to hype myself up/prepare to sacrifice. That’s really the one I recommend. But “the hanging stranger” is fun and spooky. It covers my greatest fear (loved ones being replaced) but adds another really sinister element. It’s unexpectedly biblical.

I’ve been trying to experience a sense of calmness and peace through relinquishing control. I’m not super comfortable with letting things go, so it’s been nice to surrender a little :)

I actually just found out it’s not as good for you as I thought it would be. There are so many self improvement myths today that I want to be critical of but also think it’s alright to embrace a passing fad. A daily ginger shot feels great on the throat.

Killer. Makes me feel less alone. Recorded live at a queer bookstore in Taipei. I only know this because he talks a lot between songs. He also explains what some of the songs are about in his stage banter. I usually don’t like that but Cool Fire is absolutely the exception.

Her style is so beautiful and she communicates so much depth about the human experience in every sentence. Reading Lispector is truly such a mesmerizing way to experience language.
