Did you know that there is a vibrant tradition in the American Mid West of knitting tiny hats for pets? Primarily cats, but also guinea pigs and chickens. My cat, Matisse, has about 400 and, yes, Iām currently putting several children in the Great Lakes area through college by buying everything in their mothersā Etsy shops.

I have (and have had) many pets since I was a wee girl- newts, bunnies, terriers, gerbils, frogs, iguanas, fish, hedgehogs, and Iāve loved each of them with all Iāve got. But over the last few years, Iāve found my truest passion is raising kittens (donāt tell my dogs, who seem 100% sure the cats are just disruptive indignities I must suffer to get back to them.) Kittens are natureās anti-depressant, the best reality show youāre not watching and a totally inspiring example of the mindfuck that is evolution. I mean, these little creeps have been designed by a Higher Power to look adorably lost, impossibly needyā¦ and then BAM theyāre opening all your doors and eating all your salad and looking down at you from the bookshelf like youāre the help in a Downton Abbey sequel. Plus, on a soppy note, a teensy rescue kitten is the example of tenacity we all need- they donāt give up as they go from fetal bird confusion to diabolical emperor. Any opportunity to foster, raise and/or unleash kittens on their next willing fin-dom arrangement is one of my higher callings. At the moment, two young āens are staring at me from a cactus shaped condo in the corner of our bedroom. Another eight year old adoptee/Garfield doppelganger is on a reduced calorie diet upstairs so that he can maintain his heart health and travel in something smaller than the laundry hamper. Look at us! Weāre a chic literary salon but Iām the only one who can read (I think. I have one cat who can probably read, she just does it at night when Iām not looking.)

Ever heard of it?! You need it more than you think you do! Start with spools of 1.5 inch ādouble-facedā satin (Iāve linked my favorite Amazon brand) in the specific colors of: black, crimson, turquoise, goldenrod/marigold, and sort of a icy, slate-gray, periwinkle blue. A deep, wine-red burgundy in .5 inch velvet and an Easter-y, baby pink (or blue or yellow or lilac!) in .25 inch satin will also come in surprisingly handy. Use for beautifying hairstyles, presents, and bouquets of all kinds. Giving someone a single flower is made a thousand times fancier just by tying a bow on it.

Iām saving about $2,000 a year on buying my press-on nails from Etsy instead of getting them professionally done anymore. Let that number sink in. And Iām having so much more fun this way, too! Some women have knitting. Others scrapbook. The hobby that enriches my silly little life with arts and crafts is gluing the most beautifully painted bits of plastic onto my fingertips. Iād suggest you buy two sets in the same sizes so that if one nail falls off, you can replace it. Two sets of the same design will create a manicure that lasts just under a monthāI shit you fucking not. And hereās the kicker! After you decide to take them off you can still use them again someday. To sand off the dried glue from previously worn nail sets, youāll need this $10 electric nail file from Amazon. I also like to organize my nail sets in this clear, $8 bead organizer, also from Amazon, so get that, too. When I finally got on antidepressants and stopped self-medicating my depression with an life-consuming addiction to amphetamines, I bought, like, 200 bottles of perfume. It wasnāt that before I got on proper medication, I couldnāt smell. It was just that when I was in the thick my depression, smelling something lovely just didnāt bring me any joy. It was too slight a pleasureālike listening to rain or baking cakesāto affect me. The only way I was able to afford 200 bottles of perfume was Dossier. They make dupes of iconic scents at price points of $29, $39 and $49. Their candles are great, too! My favorites are the Diptyque Do Son dupe, the Baccarat Rouge 540 dupe, the Love, Donāt Be Shy dupe (itās Rihannaās signature scent!) and, since I live in Florida now, I also love the Le Labo Santal 33 dupe because people chase me down the street to ask me what it is. Itās so sweet and heartwarming watching Floridians smell Santal 33 for the first time. But obviously I wouldnāt be caught dead wearing that perfume back in New York. Being seen as an offbeat and eccentric weird is too essential my fragile sense of self.
