I visited Egypt last year in March for the first time with my good friend, Rafik, who grew up in Cairo. A group of 5 of us traveled to the small oasis town of Siwa, which was an 8 hour escapade through the desert in a van, down one road where we got stopped at 6 military checkpoints. They look at your passport and inside your bags, and let you keep going. Siwa is the most magical place I’ve ever been to – the story of Aladdin was supposedly written there, the landscape is straight out of National Geographic, and the people are the sweetest, most chaste souls. We spent 4 days there - I didn’t use the internet once, everyday we went on an adventure somewhere in nature, I woke up every morning at 6am and I ate the best food from a garden.

a very obvious tourist recommendation but I wasn’t expecting to feel so much awe — I was excited to see them on this trip but I figured with seeing them so much in films and photographs, and with so many people telling me oh it’s so busy and theres loads of scammers and theres so much trash etc etc… I felt a bit desensitised. Those things are sort of true but it doesn’t really have any impact on how incredible they are! If anything, seeing them for the first time in the Uber made it all the more surreal and wonderful. They’re just suddenly there. I kept thinking about how insane it must have felt to see them before we had all seen a million photos and heard a million stories and then been asked a million times if we want a photo on a camel and my brain just can’t process it — sheer awe and beauty.

Sue me, I love David Lynch. He loves dreams. He said, “The nervous system functions in a fourth, unique way, as different as dreaming is from sleeping as sleeping is from waking. When you transcend, it's the only experience that lights the full brain on an EEG machine. It's the only experience that utilizes the full brain.” Anytime I have a dream that stays with me when I wake up, I grab my phone and write it down in my notes. Here’s a snippet from a recent one, “I had to put on a gown in the tiniest bathroom. A famous actress grabs my hand and we run to a huge empty room with carpet everywhere. Rolling around on the floor laughing and then she’s crying to me telling me really sad things that are going on in her life. I really wanted to take a picture of the tears on her face but felt like i couldn’t.

I used to only know their demo of the song Good Morning, Captain. A boy from highschool put it on a mix CD he made me, along with some Portishead, Sonic Youth, Eve 6, and Brand New; I would listen to it in my car on the way to volleyball practice. But recently I took a deep dive into everything they did and this album is really something else. If you want the perfect work from home soundtrack for your cold little emo heart, try it out. It’s slow, hard, sad, frantic, and terrifying – everything. Sometimes I really enjoy nauseatingly depressing music even when I’m in a fantastic mood, I don’t know if that’s something I should discuss in therapy; in the meantime, I’ll keep blasting it in my headphones while I’m taking my morning walk to get a coffee.

There’s so many bubble tea spots in Chinatown but this one is by far, the best. Get the passion fruit tea iced, with mango bubbles, twenty percent sugar. Bring cash.
