My absolute favorite author and someone who definitely knew how to party. My best friend gave me this book and it felt like an angel passed it along at a time when I needed it most. I've read this book four times. I've given it to everyone I've ever loved. I've sat at the park with my head on someone's lap while reading this. I go back to it over and over again when I don't feel understood and it gives me just what I need. Handcarved Coffins is so incredibly written, it makes me want to be a better writer. A mystery writer even. One day I'd love to paint a portrait of something as beautiful as he did with his words.

One of my all time favorite books and I would sell my kidneys to read it for the first time. ā€œDo you think anything else under heaven really matters? And how long, at the best, can it last? since you are both men and still have everywhere to go? Only five minutes, I assure you, only five minutes, and most of that, hĆ©las! in the dark. And if you think of them as dirty, then they will be dirty—they will be dirty because you will be giving nothing, you will be despising your flesh and his. But you can make your time together anything but dirty; you can give each other something which will make both of you better—forever—if you will not be ashamed, if you will only not play it safe.ā€ He paused, watching me, and then looked down to his cognac. ā€œYou play it safe long enough,ā€ he said, in a different tone, ā€œand you’ll end up trapped in your own dirty body, forever and forever and forever—like me.ā€ I cried for 2 days straight after reading this.. TWO DAYS!! My favorite excerpt from the entire book. James Baldwin is a genius and may his heavenly soul rest in peace.

This is the one that pulled me into Carver’s world for good. As much about death as about love. ā€œWhy Don’t You Dance?ā€ and the title story are sublime. For grown ups.

Carver’s prose is almost more akin to a painting than most stories. Reading this collection felt like peeking through a series of windows I wasn't meant to peek through, an act of eavesdropping on an intimate moment between strangers. He captures snippets of humanity in a way that makes his characters so familiar, despite often knowing nothing about them outside what is happening in that moment. Each story is an illustration of a relationship between people, the way a great painting can be. It’s how I imagine being on the New Jersey Turnpike would be if I could hear the conversations inside the other cars.

With everything you do. Write a love letter, make someone something sweet, show up with a boombox outside someone's window blasting In Your Eyes, buy someone flowers, do something meaningful, go on a spontaneous trip with someone, tell someone you are thinking about them, look at yourself in the mirror and tell yourself how wonderful you think you are, read a poem, get lost on the dancefloor, listen to a good song, smile at something tender, listen to Sleepy Lagoon by the platters...the possibilities are endless, you should try it sometime...

Name a better show, I dare you!!! It has everything from strong friendships to hotties in the nude to pure Marx Brothers style comedy through wild stunts. And they dressed themselves, which is pretty much the inspiration for how everyone dresses now. They wanted us to laugh, and there’s nothing nicer than laughter. Start from episode one and watch the entire thing. My favorite skit is Roller Disco Truck. I’ve laughed so hard at that show I’ve jumped up and down on my couch hugged by joy.

In the hustle and bustle of living in a busy city, it's important to make time for pie. I bake every single day. I'm serious. Apple/blueberry is my specialty.
