I have a small collection of novelty cookbooks and this one (published by the ‘Lakers Ladies Foundation’ in 1985) is my favorite. I don’t want to make Jerry Buss’s eggnog, but I like knowing that I could. More sports teams should make cookbooks.

I have a lot of cookbooks but I never cook out of them, people give them to me because they think I will like them. I have never even attempted a recipe out of this book but I love it a lot. Brooks is the chef behind NY fav veggie spot Superiority Burger, and he cut his teeth for years as one of the cities great pastry chefs. I love this book because it’s extremely readable. In between insane Michelin-level recipes, he’ll have stories about his band Born Against (a band I enjoyed in high school!) touring across the world, or just Brooks letting one of his employees share a recipe for biscuits instead of making it all about him. It’s not taking a cookbook deal as the opportunity to change his life and become the next Ottolenghi, he basically made a hardcover zine about his story and how he got to where he is. If you have someone in your life who grew up around punk music and is now old, get them this book. They’ll form a bond with it, even if they don’t know what a Kouign-Amann is. Also, the photography and graphic design are refreshingly honest.

🔴The Woks of Life (also a website with plenty of online recipes) by Bill, Judy, Sarah, & Kaitlin Leung: This is a book by a Chinese-American family that teaches you about traditional Chinese recipes and also American-Chinese takeout classics. They include cute family anecdotes which is really cute. 🔴The Food of Sichuan by Fuchsia Dunlop: I LOVE Sichuan food and these recipes have all turned out well for me. Fuchsia is a famous chef and although she is from the UK she studied culinary arts in China. What I love about both books is that they’re definitely written for people who may not be from China, but are more likely to live in the US or UK. They explain what certain unfamiliar ingredients are and give you advice on how to find them or what to substitute for them if you can’t find them.

One of the most romantic films of all time. Warren Beatty and Diane Keaton play hot American socialists John Reed and Louise Bryant. They meet in 1915 in Greenwich Village, fall in love and then get swept up in the Russian Revolution. At one point Louise has a love affair with the alcoholic playwright Eugene O’Neill (played by Jack Nicholson), also deeply hot. It’s 3 hours and 15 minutes with a budget that would be over $100mil today. I can’t believe this movie exists.

Normal cashews are oily and gross. Sprouted cashews are delicious. They have a crunchy, light texture and slightly sweet, earthy taste. I love them. Sprouted walnuts are good too.

The Etsy community is very friendly. Most Etsy creators will make things custom if you message them with reference images. Linda of FacciDesigns does the most intricate needle-felted animal sculptures. She made me a wedding cake topper with our cats. During the Midsommar campaign, I needed miniature flower garlands made for the Bear In A Cage toy. My Etsy-savvy colleague Gaby found Judy and Melissa who both specialize in dollhouse wreaths and floral arrangements. Together they made over 400 garlands by hand.
