SUCH a wild ride, weāve got an affair, a celeb psychic medium, an inter-dimensional cloud of ancestral grief, a failing marriage (and a pregnancy), the Russian Revolution, generational trauma, Soviet orphanages, and at least three questionable women āI feel like this is a superb book for the Moshfegh, batuman, emma cline, Mona Awad crowds

I just got back from the release party for my friend Molly's debut novel, and I have been itching to rec this book for years. It was over a decade in the making and is some of the best writing I have ever read. I'm lucky to know her, and if you "vibe with mind parasites, a time-transcending queer love story, body horror, and a murder mystery" then this is absolutely the book for you. (I linked to her site!)

Whenever someone is like āI havenāt read a book in 5 years, what should I read?ā I suggest this cult classicābecause it is experientially easy but conceptually rich, and thus will effortlessly adhere to your attention and satisfy your urges. It is a Hollywood novel about an asshole (timeless genre!) who surfs the wave of power and excess until it all goes Terribly Awry. The book was published in 1988 so it is dated in fun ways but also timeless in the ways that matter. (Robert Altman made a movie of it but the book is betterāwhich is saying a lot, because the movie rules!)

This is a movie Iād never heard of until recently, but it seems like it should be a stone-cold classic. (Perhaps it ISāmy film education is spotty.) It is about a mid-1980s era Bad Girl who loves sex and is angry and lives on the Irish seaside. You can get it on various streaming services. Iām a sucker for any piece of art about an irrepressible wench.Ā good poster too!
