The author is a renowned professor of law at the prestigious University of Michigan Law School, which I mention only because it complicates and exalts the fact that he’s also a true freak! Along with scholarly legal tomes, Miller has written a bunch of books on his passion subjects: humiliation, imposter syndrome, Icelandic bloodfeuds...and my favorite, a book that presents a unified theory of disgust. This book explains sex, bodies, leprosy, religion, contamination, food poisoning, why it is profoundly repulsive when a guy has soup in his beard, and more. Disgust is as much a part of daily human experience as breathing and sleeping, after all. I reread this once a year. My copy is illegible from the marginalia. Bonus: it has maybe the best book cover I’ve ever seen.

great book if you're a freak like me. little horror fiction novel about gay serial killers and their intertwining love lives in 90's new orleans. people call this novel one of the grossest most shocking books of all time, so naturally i had to read it. i devoured the book in the span of three days and loved every second of it (despite how scary it is haha). super interesting commentary about living with aids and fascinating portrayals of the psyche of a serial killer. wouldn't read this one if you are at all squeamish, it's very descriptive in its gore and unflinchingly real. this book reminded me of if an ottessa moshfegh novel had a fucked up gorey baby with a gregg araki movie.

Although released in 2004, this fiction novel has a tonne of early internet feel to it. Taking place entirely through chat forums and reviews on gay escort sites, the story follows people’s stories and reviews of an elusive escort. I’ll warn you, it’s some of the most horrifyingly graphic stuff you’ll read but, I adore how it uses the internets lack of trust to its advantage- constantly throwing the reader and the characters off the scent of an ever expanding story of half truths and blatant lies. Genuinely one of my favourite books and I still don’t really understand why.

recommending this book to people is largely impossible so I'm grateful to have this platform lol Vulture called it "the first great incel novel" but it's more than that. It's about shame and avoidance in the internet age and the extremes we reach when we suppress our desires. I was thinking about this book for weeks afterwards and it really fucked me up (in a good way)

...and not letting it stop you. I haven’t been the same since I read this post, but I continue to garnish drinks with these neon accessories.

Speaking of Iceland! This is an Icelandic alcohol that tastes exactly like rye bread. The flavor is both herbal and cozy—I think of it as “upholstered vodka.” Tastes refreshing in summer and life-affirming in winter. No clue why it isn’t more popular.

Whenever someone is like “I haven’t read a book in 5 years, what should I read?” I suggest this cult classic—because it is experientially easy but conceptually rich, and thus will effortlessly adhere to your attention and satisfy your urges. It is a Hollywood novel about an asshole (timeless genre!) who surfs the wave of power and excess until it all goes Terribly Awry. The book was published in 1988 so it is dated in fun ways but also timeless in the ways that matter. (Robert Altman made a movie of it but the book is better—which is saying a lot, because the movie rules!)
