The best sleep-soundtrack is not thunderstorms or white noise or waves. It’s Simlish. It’s Buy Mode. It’s all the familiar sound-effects.

When I'm working I like to have something playing in the background. Usually, that comes from youtube. As I've mentioned previously in recs - sometimes it's Kenji videos, but often it’s random ambient youtube playlists. Whether it's ambient forest sounds, libraries, or whatever your favorite fictional world is (yes I play ambient harry potter music), there are endless several-hour-long videos on youtube for you. This is ASMR at its finest.

It seems to me that when people hear “ASMR” they picture someone pouring sand into a bucket or chewing mashed potatoes or something. Those have their place but the real shit for me are these fantasy-leaning, themed environment ASMR vids with titles like “Victorian Era Ambience - Soft Rain Sounds, Horses, Crows, Bell Sounds” or “Old Library Sounds”. They’re accompanied by slightly animated CGI images kinda like a video game menu screen. I think I first developed a taste for this kinda stuff watching my older brother play Resident Evil 2 as a kid. The sound design and visuals were so transportative. I was thrilled. A lot of my pastimes, in one way or another, are about transporting myself mentally to another time and place. These are a great assist.

It sounds almost dystopian to say, a lot of us can’t do anything without YouTube or noise to drown out all the noise we experience in one day. I go to sleep with this on in the back and the visuals either on a projector or dim lit laptop screen.

Ever heard of it?! You need it more than you think you do! Start with spools of 1.5 inch “double-faced” satin (I’ve linked my favorite Amazon brand) in the specific colors of: black, crimson, turquoise, goldenrod/marigold, and sort of a icy, slate-gray, periwinkle blue. A deep, wine-red burgundy in .5 inch velvet and an Easter-y, baby pink (or blue or yellow or lilac!) in .25 inch satin will also come in surprisingly handy. Use for beautifying hairstyles, presents, and bouquets of all kinds. Giving someone a single flower is made a thousand times fancier just by tying a bow on it.

If the heel isn’t walkable then just call it what it is: A tiny art installation for your closet. Unwalkable shoes sit on shelves like small leather sculptures! The very purpose of shoes is to increase your mobility and comfort—not to limit your stamina and plans for the night! Stop wasting money and start engaging with reality instead. You will never wear them. Save the money.

When I finally got on antidepressants and stopped self-medicating my depression with an life-consuming addiction to amphetamines, I bought, like, 200 bottles of perfume. It wasn’t that before I got on proper medication, I couldn’t smell. It was just that when I was in the thick my depression, smelling something lovely just didn’t bring me any joy. It was too slight a pleasure—like listening to rain or baking cakes—to affect me. The only way I was able to afford 200 bottles of perfume was Dossier. They make dupes of iconic scents at price points of $29, $39 and $49. Their candles are great, too! My favorites are the Diptyque Do Son dupe, the Baccarat Rouge 540 dupe, the Love, Don’t Be Shy dupe (it’s Rihanna’s signature scent!) and, since I live in Florida now, I also love the Le Labo Santal 33 dupe because people chase me down the street to ask me what it is. It’s so sweet and heartwarming watching Floridians smell Santal 33 for the first time. But obviously I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing that perfume back in New York. Being seen as an offbeat and eccentric weird is too essential my fragile sense of self.
