Okay. I'm gonna try to keep this very short. I hope we've all been woken up by the slew of #StopAsianHate tweets and posts in light of the recent rise in violence against AAPIs (Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders). As an AAPI, I don't think I've ever stopped and asked myself, what does #StopAsianHate even mean? This really informative video does a great job of unpacking why Asian Americans are being targeted. More importantly, it touches upon the fact that this is a cycle that has happened over, and over again.

everything is politics. from vaccines to lgbt matters, politicians have leveraged the things conservative americans don’t understand to stoke fear and confusion. this isn’t anything new. what is new is the algorithms that reenforce those fears. comment sections we’re told to treat like real conversation just flooded with faceless accounts saying their most vile inside thoughts. it’s easy to want to interact and easier to just read it all and be mad. but every second spent engaging is another brain scrambling distraction. these sensationalized posts and comments do nothing for education, understanding, or empathy. even on the left, slacktivism actively hurts the cause. theres an idea that someone who holds ignorant beliefs is *bad* in all politicized fields. but let’s be real, just because uncle jeff is pissed about tuck underwear it doesn’t mean he’s a climate change denier. generalizing people is exactly what politicians want from us. social issues are important and politics aren’t going away from that any time soon. but social media is a slippery slope and i personally refuse to engage. when it bleeds into my real life (”parents just WANT their kids to be trans”) i try to engage in conversations that get to the root of the issue. where’s this info coming from, why do you believe that? these are the kind of questions strangers won’t ask them on the internet. misinformation is a sickness that we’re all plagued with. to find some truth and understanding we cannot be having these discussions on platforms like facebook or instagram or twitter. if we do, we’re just giving these tech ceos and politicians what they need: engagement and fear

Since quarantine started in early March, I’ve had more time on my hands than usual. To fill this time usually spent with friends and outdoors, I’ve been watching Twitch streamer Hasan Piker. Piker, a political commentator, streams every day to thousands of viewers and has been a great resource to help me learn more about leftist politics. For years, I found myself encapsulated in the “Instagram-activism” bubble while not really understanding the context and gravity of the things I was advocating for. I had good intentions, but if someone really dug into my positions I wouldn’t have been able to back them up confidently. Thanks to Piker, I believe I can articulate leftist talking points in a better manner while understanding the historical context and nuance that comes with them. It’s really important to understand how we’ve gotten here as a country in order to advocate for the future, and I encourage people to reflect on their own beliefs and their ability to defend them. There’s always more to learn.

There’s been multiple reports of AI taking up lots of energy to generate things and we don’t need more energy being wasted to produce a soulless, computer generated piece of AI art (Idk how others feel about AI art but whenever I look at it I feel sick and my heart sinks because it just feels so empty) so that’s one thing. Another issue is all these horrific deepfake scandals, to an incident that happened to at least 1 girl at the high school I went to (I’m not gonna say their names or anything because they’ve already been through so much shit) to South Korea’s recent crackdown on deepfake p0rn which revealed just how rampant it was throughout the country (and I just know shit like this is happening worldwide it’s not just their country). There’s also social media manipulation, biases in AI (only 100/7,000 of this world’s languages being used in chatbot training which only contributes further to languages being endangered), the very real threat of AI to be used to create more inequality, etc. While it looks like generative AI is flopping in some areas now (thank god) I’m still very concerned about it

I’ve never been to Disney as a kid and as I grew older I always felt like I was too old for it. I spontaneously tagged along with my family the day before they left and I think that was the best decision I’ve ever made. I’m a huge fan of Star Wars and Avatar, and even as an adult I think I had the best week of my life and I felt like a kid again. I legitimately had real tears of joy on some of the rides. It’s never too late!

While everyone is raving about their trendy nonstick pans, I’m here to bring the spotlight back to cast iron cookware. There’s a huge stigma around how hard it is to take care of cast irons, but it’s really not bad! You just gotta keep using it, and over time, it basically becomes nonstick. This article has sent off a tangent, and now I am a proud owner of a well-seasoned cast iron pan and griddle.

Excessively hiking this year has been so fun, but the other half of the fun is the technical hiking apparel that goes with it - oh, and wearing only hiking gear even when I’m not hiking. I really appreciate Japan’s love for outdoor style and culture. GO OUT’s web magazine has been my daily morning check-in and my biggest outdoor gear inspiration. I recently picked up a few of their physical magazines (it’s hard to come by in the US) and I really enjoy flipping through them every now and then. Contrary to typical magazines that we’re used to, GO OUT magazines are basically beefed up catalogs of goodies and collabs that make for great coffee table content.
