Someone has to hold me back. I think Iāve been to the Self Edge Portland store once a week for the past month, maybe? As you get older (Iām 29 this year), you start to feel the urge to develop a bit more of a uniform wardrobe. I still love my choices, donāt get me wrong - you canāt be a clothing guy and not have options. But if I can wake up in the morning and know I have a go to pair of jeans with a fitted white tee, it makes the rest of my decisions easier. Self Edge is consistently my favorite store to buy long lasting, quality essentials that will keep you looking timeless. I am victim of buying an outlandish designer piece and getting 2 wears out of it a year - but soon, like me, you will prefer to grab some jeans and a shirt and call it a day.
I have thought about this at length, I fear. I want to look and feel at ease in my clothes and I shop for clothing very intentionally. For me the rules of outfits are: - No single-designer looks
- Steam/press rarely
- No logos (sneakers are the exception)
- Always wear at least 1 garment with visible wear or damage
- Get dressed intentionally every day
- It does not matter how conventionally flattering the look is. I care only about how it makes me feel in my body
- Never clean Ur (my) shoes except to keep leather in condition I shop almost exclusively second hand and in personāI only buy if I would be heartbroken to come back for a garment to find it had passed me by forever. Most pieces I see are effectively one-offs because I treat them this way. I am attracted to Japanese workwear silhouettes, modular garments, and drama. āMyā colour is the shade precisely between yellow and orange. All my jewelry is gifted. I aim to keep garments until the end of their lives.
god i could really write a whole essay on this for context, iām studying pattern cutting and have been really into/very specific about my clothes forever but have known fashion since maybe 15-16 because of how i fit into the clothes-scape my tastes cannot be separated from trends whether i like it or not. how i dress is rather on trend lately tbh over the years my pants have gotten bigger as i grow more accustomed to the comfort of having less fabric on your body + the dynamism of a wide leg in the somewhat constrained silhouettes of menswear. also inextricable from wider pants just becoming more a part of the collective consciousness and thus my consciousness my tops have gotten smaller & tighter as i've grown more confident and comfortable with my body. still love a baggy vintage tee when itās warm though maybe best way is to talk my fav clothes and why theyāre my fav clothes: - plasticana clogs. super california shoe but also like a half clog half loafer. i love heeled shoes i think theyāre more elegant and just more smooth so iāve worn loafers mostly for the last 6 years. these are like if those felt like sneakers to me. so easy so comfy
- fadepants cords. super baggy, so fucking comfortable. really dynamic shape with a lot of personality. they just feel right
- slim gildan tees. they remind me of the artist guy in Blow-Up and the way that guy looks reminds me of the energy we all used to have in the wood/metalshops at parsons, functional dress
- hanes beaters. so new york summer. also i love how they fit me they flatter my build
- oakley sunglasses. indestructible. ridiculous shape in a way i can own. michael jordan wore them in the 90ās and i love basketball & his game
- bandanas. remind me of home. remind me of my gay ass new york friends. a lot of them were from home too but i met them all in new york. funny how life works. they suit my hair well when i donāt feel like wearing a hat or i havenāt got time for a shower, and itās very windy in stratford a hat might blow off
- 90ās vintage snapbacks. they fit over my hair thatās really the only reason
- our legacy borrowed bd shirt. it reminds me of the shirts my friend katie wears and those shirts are aggressively northern california. so is this one. and itās just cute
- supreme leather collar work jacket. has all of the pockets, and the roundness/diesel type fit that a new yorkerās jacket would have. and that makes me happy. form + function i think right now my style is in a pretty solid place of amalgamating the things that make me me, between upbringing, interests, places iāve lived + the things iāve taken from them, queerness, and my growing understanding of how all the things i wear are made. feeling really good about it all. want to figure out how to wear 90ās retro basketball sneakers though because theyāre something iāve loved forever and im a huge basketball fan but theyāve just never felt right when i tried them, except foamposites. personal style is a neverending pursuit if youāre doing it right
GET YOUR CRIB RIGHT. This is another spot Iāve only secretly told people about but I want you guys to be the best versions of yourselves and that includes making your home a place you enjoy being in. I live in a 1950ās mid century modern home so these rugs match the vibe and look Iām going for perfectly. But donāt worry, Iāve seen these rugs in concrete studios, wood lofts, etc and they just work. They just look good everywhere. Throw out your IKEA rug and start building a quality home - the prices are super reasonable, I think Iāve spent no more than $250 on a single rug? This dude is legit and it will spice up your decor, I promise.
Iām bout to blow up my spot but whatever, you guys need this. I canāt stress enough the importance of being a person who smells nice. Itās not hard to do, but youād be surprised. Everyone goes straight to the colognes and skips out on the quality of their detergent. It makes a world of difference, Iām telling you. This shit right here will gift you infinite compliments. I sell vintage for a living and I have received over a dozen emails asking why their shirt smells so good. THIS IS IT. You donāt need a ton, itās super concentrated, so I would recommend mixing less than a tablespoon with your normal detergent. I wash my sheets weekly with this too and it makes me excited to go to bed (itās literally laundry day in my picture above ^^).
In my 2020 Spotify Recap, Al Green was my number one most listened to artist. He is the king of āset it and forget itā - you never once have to press skip on his Spotify radio. If I had to choose, his album Letās Stay Together is one of my favorites (along with Kind of Blue (1959) by Miles Davis). Iāll stop writing here because I would prefer you play the album while you read the rest of this newsletter.
