I got a natal chart reading from one of my favorite astrologers, Naimonu James, on my birthday a couple years ago and she recommended this book - and it’s stayed at my bedside since. Written by Jungian psychoanalyst and poet, Dr. Clarissa Pinkold Estes, it’s a beautiful research piece on the myths and stories that have been passed down through folkloric traditions. The essence of the book is how women regain their wild intuition in the context of a patriarchal culture that strips it. It’s excellent and I recommend it to everyone, especially femme-identifying people.

When I think about ‘my tastes’ in an expansive way, I think the common thread is explorations of femme-ness— living as a woman, being perceived as a woman, experiencing girlhood, existing as a woman within (or really under) masculine cultures/political structures/households etc. I often joke to my friends that I don’t read male authors because I don’t want a tourists guide, but I do find that almost all of the art I enjoy is women’s work. Favorite artists: Faith Ringold, Camille Claudel, Artemisia Gentileschi, Claudette Johnson Favorite poets/writers/authors: Maggie O’Farrell, Ada LĂŹmon, bell hooks, Charlotte BrontĂ«, Valeria Luiselli Favorite directors: Celine Sciamma, Kelly Reichardt, Celine Song, Sarah Polley, Greta Gerwig Favorite films: Petite Maman, The Worst Person In The World, Frances Ha, Ladybird Outside of the art I consume, I think my life is very oriented around womanhood— my apartment is overtly a woman’s house, my closest friends are women, the ways that I exercise and cook and dress are all intentionally oriented around my woman’s body and it’s cycles and needs but also the expression of being a woman, like not just a human person but a Woman, in the way that bell hooks and Virginia Woolf write about.

women who run with wolves, women who run with rats. the true ultimate bonding activity for you and the girls. because you’ll never forget how they sheltered you when you were low. one of the most liberating rituals I perform in New York is popping a squat in between parked cars or a dark corner and letting it all go
. wild wild women we are deemed to be. they may look down upon us because perhaps it isn’t “polite”. But when you’re bursting at the seams, why must we settle for discomfort? What’s a girl to do? We are not graced with simplicity to turn to the wall– subtly concealed without judgement. Our anatomy binds us to the confines of bearing it all in a squat. With added complexity given the outfit of choice. And always the obstacle of not splattering our cute shoes. but id only be telling you a falsehood if I said peeing outdoors isn’t so enjoyable whether it be in the middle of a forest or the city street. Even when all odds may be stacked against you. Only God can judge me. But God is a woman anyway.

“There have been many high-spirited characters before Jo March, but none like her, who wrote, remained herself. Creating Jo at a time when women had yet the right to vote was an unflinching move. She was an activist by example. And standing apart to extend a sister’s hand, she has always been there to greet maverick girls like myself, with a toss of her cropped hair and a playful wink to say come along. To guide us, provide encouragement, lay her footprints on a path she beckons us to follow.”

Keely is a very talented artist and fashion icon. She recently started Birthday Girl Shop - making ‘sexy clothes for daily use’. I just got a set of her ‘Dalmation Mushroom Button Down’, deadstock kilt/ Sesame Street skirt and a ‘Big Kiss’ bow/ tie. She hand-paints and sews everything out of her apartment in Los Angeles and I’m so happy we can finally match.

The best facemasks ever, I have two. Chiara makes these patchwork quilted masks from deadstock fabric - beautiful, and adjustable for the perfect fit. They remind me of her every time I wear them, which I think is my favorite part. Highly recommend!
