I like a chilled red but what I really enjoy is drinking dry red wines over ice –– preferably crushed ice. I know that’s against the rules or whatever but the first boy who broke my heart in New York was a sommelier at Le Bernardin and also that’s how Diane Keaton drinks her wine so I don’t give a fuck what anyone thinks.

I’m 35 but my drinking habits are 87. Dare I say I have….wine fatigue? I’m sure that will change in a few hours, but sometimes I feel like I can’t drink another glass of “pet nat.” I love sherry, I love vermouth, I love white wine on ice, complete with cocktail onions just like my Grandma Prue used to drink. For vermouth, there are a lot of interesting small brands out there doing cool stuff with it, but I love this one from Partida Creus the most (anything they make is wonderful). I like it in a small glass with a large ice cube, topped with a lil soda water. For wines, I wouldn’t disrespect anything too expensive with an ice cube, but I do love a basic, straightforward white wine that could be described as “easy drinking” with “light acidity.” The cocktail onion makes it, trust me (and my grandma).

i feel like the restaurants with tiny glasses of no ice water are also ones where you have wine so less water gives you more room for wine :)

I went to Miami for Art Basel and by the end of the weekend I was filled with hangxiety so I spent an extra day sitting on the beach reading Stephanie LaCava’s newish novel I Fear My Pain Interests You. It’s about the daughter of two punk rock stars who suffers from “congenital analgesia,” which means she feels no physical pain, and though it’s definitely not a breezy beach read, it destroyed me, in a good way.

People are constantly asking me where to go out in New York, but that’s kind of a hard question to answer. What I try to encourage people to do is get together with a group of people they love and go somewhere they would normally never go. People are far too fucking pretentious about their nightlife in this city and if you’ve spent every weekend for the last three months at Basement or Bossa or whatever, you’re probably chasing something you’ll never actually catch. I have the most fun when my friends go somewhere out of our ordinary, with people we’d never normally associate with. All of this to say: It’s ok to go dance at ACME sometimes.

Last year I watched Orlando, the 1992 period drama based on the Virginia Woolf novel of the same name, starring Tilda Swinton, for the first time. In case you don’t know, it’s about an Elizabethan nobleman who can’t die and one day wakes up to discover he’s a woman. I don’t think I’ll ever go six months again for the rest of my life (presumably, unlike Orlando, I’ll die one day) without watching it. It hurts when she breaks the fourth wall.
