This movie’s weird. If you don’t know it, Lost River is Ryan Goslings single venture into directing, what some may call a vanity project. That’s really what I love about it. There’s no beating around the bush here, he fully embraces the world he’s created to a fault. It’s over the top in the oddest ways. The story is…some might say lynch-esque, and the cinematography is honestly beautiful (some might say Winding-Refn-esque). If you want a movie with names like Christina Hendricks, Matt Smith, and Saoirse Ronan with a flawed story about a seemingly apocalyptic Detroit, with a flooded lost town, a gang leader/bully named Bully, and a guy with no lips, then watch it. Just go in expecting something weird.
