Roy himself referred to this bizarre A side as a "mini opera"-- a really wild ride both sonically and emotionally. He wrote and recorded this with a huge philharmonic orchestra right after his wife and sons died in classically tragic ways (motorcycle accident, house fire). The fact that he was certainly having some sort of emotional breakdown is pretty evident on this cut, it's awesome.
Most people (including me of three years ago) probably know him because of Pretty Woman and I wrongly assumed that all his other songs sounded similar. Once I heard his version of Unchained Melody and his song In Dreams I knew I had to do a deep dive. The operatic voice! The melancholy and yearning! Immediately added to my sad girl spotify 🤍
It's so hard, it's taken me almost 30 years to learn how to do it in the most rudimentary way. People in New York hate this. Learn to love the depth of the mirror!
