a strange little wordpress site chronicling all of the businesses that have closed in my hometown, but it could really be about anyone's hometown. call me crazy but scrolling the posts is always a weirdly emotional experience... it's the failed promise of the american dream laid bare, a time capsule of suburban decay. it makes me wonder what it means for one guy to spend 15 years religiously documenting these closures.
some of the photos are just unbelievable. the "need money now?" shadow cast on the wall of an empty payday loan store. the desiccated plant still in it's pot at the dry cleaners (a sign that reads "fresh as a flower" barely visible in the background).
very heady stuff.

this popped up on twitter first for me, but i kind of like the website. From what I can tell, the gist of this “project” is that a couple guys are going on trips to rural areas of the United States and taking pictures of the buildings or landmarks. The draw to me is hard to put into words - there’s history in the buildings themselves, certain styles from different time periods, wear and dilapidation from lack of upkeep. A similar draw to that of MythoAmerica. Different areas in the world tell completely unique stories through architecture and I find that some of the most common buildings in rural america tell the most.
