Such a haunting, devastatingly beautiful piece of acoustic brilliance from the late-great outlaw country singer-songwriter. People like him and Townes Van Zandt truly elevated the genre to a form of high art with their gorgeous, lived-in lyricism.

I'm amazed no one else has mentioned the great Townes Van Zandt. This is my favourite of his, a beautiful voice and songwriter gone far too soon.

This is the third Townes album I have listened to, and I think my favorite so far !! It’s a live album recorded in the late 70s. Townes is a songwriter who seldom wastes a word, and his storytelling feels both personal and mythical at once. He weaves his own life into both the straighforward ballads, and the outlaw country character portraits. Waiting Around to Die has brought me to tears on more than one occasion. My favorite song on the album at the moment is White Freight Liner Blues, a candid track about his struggles with heroin, and being sadenned to see his friends ailed by the same affliction. Townes is truly one of the great American songwriters.

A joint and a coffee is conventionally accepted as a “hippy speedball;” but given that I’ve quit smoking (my formerly beloved cigarettes, in particular) for all intents and purposes over the last couple years
edibles are my preferred method of marijuana ingestion (if any). Regardless of how you do it
the up and down is beloved for a reason. Mix in a little spiritual jazz
Pharoah Sanders’ golden age is my favorite, personally
now you’re cooking, ladies and germs. Just don’t overdo it on dosage. Then you’ll be feeling way too spiritual and the lightness is tarnished.

It’s been discussed here and there on this platform through different recommendations before, BUT I feel that there’s an almost holy level of beauty to Sunday slow-start rituals that needs to be emphasized. Maybe you sleep in a little longer than during a harried work week, maybe you randomly wake up early and quietly steep yourself in the sunlight as it starts to filter into your favorite room in your space, perhaps a physical edition of a Sunday newspaper or periodical to thoughtfully consider (or even to just sort of stare at), slow-sipping that delicious caffeinated beverage you start each and every day with, some warm and cozy jazz or folk accenting the proceedings in the background (centering you spiritually). Treat yourself. Life can rule if you let it.

Such a beautiful feeling. You go from being fully ensconced in feeling terrible and not seeing the forest for the trees and thinking this is your life now to
boom, back to normal and life is great. Appreciate it. You now have a new lease on existence!
