Revisited these when babysitting my 7 year old half brother. He had never seen them, so I’ve been showing him a new one every night. God these are all such masterpieces and are films that I think grow a deeper understanding and appreciation with age. I am just so in awe of animation and those who dedicate their lives to mastering it.

violette I adore Only Yesterday! A departure from my usual preference for gloriously realised fantasy worlds, but it was so well done!

I also recommend films by the other head of his company, Isao Takahata. His films tend to be much more subtle, but Only Yesterday, and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya are two of my favorites.

Favorites: Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. I tend to be more drawn to the ones that have strong messages on environmentalism.

My favorite work from Hayao Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli, as well as one of the first anime I watched when I was a kid and didn't even know what anime was (the first was Pokemon lol). The nostalgia is real but I connect with this film so much more in my late twenties.
When I think of Howl's Moving Castle, I think of love and just how life-changing it can be when you meet someone new who ends up being someone important and special. When people are positive influences on each other and they are for the better from having met and maintaining those bonds. Quite frankly, I live for this shit. This is ofc most evident between the two leads Howl and Sophie, but it's not exclusive to them.
I also think of just how goddamn beautiful and magical this movie is to watch, but that's pretty par for the course when it comes to Miyazaki/Ghibli :)

My school did a workshop about it when I was like 10 and I think the amount of care and dedication it takes to hand crafting each and every frame is so cool. When its done well you get a really stylised films, I’m thinking like Chicken Run, Wallace and Gromit, Coraline, Fantastic Mr. Fox, ParaNorman and The Box Trolls all of which I loved as a kid and every time I rewatch them I get the same sense of childlike wonder I did when I watched them the first time. I know there’s a lot of crossover with CGI now when making them but just the concept of stop motion animation is really cool.

Poet & songwriter best known as the frontman of “Silver Jews,“ and the lesser known “Purple Mountains,“ Berman has a way of exploring the beauty in the darker aspects of life. Berman tragically took his in 2019. He had such a special way with words both as a poet and a songwriter. My favorite song of his, “Famous Eyes” is linked above.

Founded in 1995, Broadcast was an English band that drew influences from 60s psychedelia, electronic, and experimental music. Following the death of their lead singer in 2011, Broadcast has found a new life and a cult following due to the mystery surrounding the band. I’ve linked my favorite album, Tender Buttons above.

Due to the involvement of the US Military Sponsoring SXSW, many bands and artists have opted to pull out of SXSW as protest for the ongoing genocide and Ethnic Cleansing in Palestine. I’m very proud of my friends from Perfectly Imperfect and Baby’s All Right for dropping out of SXSW, and for standing in solidarity with the people of Palestine. Free Palestine 🍉
