Met them years ago when I was living in Portland and became friends with James for a while - he lived in Elliott Smith’s old house! Here is the feature I wrote about them for Magnet: https://magnetmagazine.com/2006/09/19/the-shins-great-expectations/

I got obsessed with the Australian improv jazz group the Necks last year. Three old dudes who, every show, play two 45-minute improvised sets. Totally spellbinding. Have barely scraped the surface of their catalogue but they have one for every occasion: Open is peak Shakti mat music.

I think their band name is awful lol, but their music is great. It reminds me of early Shout Out Louds stuff, so much so that I got this weird nostalgic dislocation to my high school sense of self during the first listen. Anyway if you like catchy and anthemic choruses over mellow yet crisp grooves then check them out.

A leisurely stroll in the pouring rain is invigorating and a little unhinged but like in a romantic way. Just don't forget to leave your phone inside!

It adds mystique. We played a show at Market Hotel recently and I wore a pair during the performance and just putting them on helped me get into the zone. Added bonus: no one knows who you’re looking at.
