here's a rec for an ongoing comic that you can catch up on quickly. jonathan hickman's ultimate spider-man exists in the brand new ultimate universe. here's a recap of the ultimate universe as it is now: in the early 2000s, marvel made a line of comics where every heroes' story was at its beginning, as an easy jumping on point for new readers. they called it the ultimate universe, earth-1610. in that universe was a reed richards, mr fantastic, who became known as the supervillain "the maker." in 2015 the ultimate universe is destroyed and the maker escapes to the main marvel universe, earth-616. in 2023, the maker decides he wants his home back, so he creates a brand new universe, earth-6160, the new ultimate universe. he uses time travel in this new earth to prevent any superheroes from becoming superheroes. he controls a cabal of world leaders, waging fake wars to keep the economy and culture running.
in short: an evil guy from a generation where anything was possible chose to rob the next generation of their power, of their future, in order to horde all the power for himself. sound familiar? in true marvel fashion, it's the world outside your window! just as much a reaction to the times as the original ultimate universe was a reaction to the war on terror (that's a whole other thing).
which brings us to spider-man. peter parker is in his late 30s, married to mary jane with two kids. he's a photographer at the daily bugle where his uncle ben works. by all measures he should be happy, but he's plagued by a vague ennui, a feeling that he's not whole. then comes a message from tony stark, the terrorist known as iron lad, saying that peter was supposed to become a hero named spider-man as a teenager, but that that life was robbed from him. stark offers peter the chance to take his life back, with a radioactive spider and a supersuit. it's a great book, and what reads as interesting to me is that, in this world where peter never became spider-man, his life and the life of those around him are genuinely better off (at the cost of evil ruling new york). it begs the question: is peter parker able to have it all?
