From their 1989 album Cloudland - a rare stab at something like radio-friendly rock music. This particular song is a really touching and bittersweet rumination on time and loss. A great, hidden gem. “my dream, man, it was a tin can”

obviously different from their best studio record but still one of the most beautiful pieces of music made in the last decade

"I smoked a joint and started playing the piano," said Church frontman Steve Kilbey about the writing of the Aussie band's biggest, dreamiest hit. "Then Karin (his girlfriend at the time) came into the room and we just made it up together. A spontaneous event." A song about "nothing" that the band originally didn't like, "Under the Milky Way" is inspired by the Amsterdam music venue the Melkveg ("Milky Way") and came out on this day to race to no. 24 on the US Billboard charts and eventually win "Single of the Year" at the ARIA awards. (It appeared in "Donnie Darko" and a bunch of ads too). It's part of a record ("Starfish") that includes the amazing "Reptile" and is at least the band's best-known if not outright finest work. PS: you could be forgiven for thinking the solo in the song's break is played on a bagpipe, it's actually a Fender Jazzmaster guitar played with an E-bow and then fed through a Synclavier.

This is one of the greatest proto-psych rock albums of all time. 1971. Bunch of 1st generation black British dudes from former colonies. Crazy album and crazy story. They disappeared as the album was nearing completion. There was no follow up album, no nothing, they never reappeared. The name of the album comes from the fact that the label decided to put the music out after not being able to find them for a while because it was so good that “We Had To Let You Have It”. I know this because I have an original copy on vinyl and there is a handwritten note printed on a piece of paper inside the sleeve. The track “Rain” is for my money one of the best songs written in this genre from that era. If they had been a popular band, I think it would be considered a classic. Also, I dare you to listen to the song “The System” and tell me Lynyrd Skynyrd didn’t lift the main lick of the Free Bird solo from it. Yeah, I said it.

Posting doesn’t necessarily reflect delusions of grandeur about one’s influence. it’s a simple, communicative act. give yourself some credit, trust social instincts. If people had phones at any time in human history- they’d be using them.

Ranking things out of three (no half stars, 0 permissible) is a valuable exercise. The limitations force one to reckon with the boundaries of language and the necessity of a respect for nuance. One out of three could be pretty bad..on the other hand, it's still pretty good.
