if you ask me for a play to cite, it’ll probably be this one. there is a special place in my heart for this play.  it is able to articulate the exact feeling of resentment as well as joy for a loved one getting out of a hard situation when you are still going through it. its romantic, in its own definitive way - and lives with you days, months, and even years after reading. i would give anything to see the pbs special of viola davis and rosie perez performing this

Pulitzer Prize winning play about a group of Iranians studying for the TOEFL. I would have been perfectly happy even watching an extended 3-hour version Great story, beautiful dialogue, good pacing, excellent lighting design, and not to mention a group of incredible actors and awesome direction — all Broadway debuts! This is what happens when you let people just tell their story without letting “marketability“ get in the way. Now go do your part and show Broadway that these are the shows we want to see with your wallets and your butts in seats

this is one of my favorite plays and it's delicious and fucked up Ella has a lot of juicy sections that would work well for a monologue

everything at this theater is naturally endearing and has made me question the bounds of theater. every time I watch a playwrights production, it gets transferred to Broadway. tap innnn
