probably the most whimsical movie to exist and a staple of my childhood. it’s been a while since i last watched it so i don’t really remember how the story holds up, but i trust younger me’s judgment. it still has one of my favourite set and costume designs of any film ever. the things i would do to get my hands on those dresses!! so so nostalgic and so so pretty!
A nostalgic, synthy modern fairy tale shot on 16 mm. It’s about three kids on a journey to get their mom a blueberry pie. Visually pleasing and so so comforting to watch. I have not enjoyed a movie this much in so long! (Stream it on mubi)
not sure if it’s technically fantasy as it’s set in Arthurian legend…but it feels like magical realism to me. The scene with the giants gives me the same divine yet grounded awe I associate with the genre. The Odyssean vignette style makes it feel wonderfully like a series of magical short stories. It contains two of my favourite scenes in film of all time! A few other recommendations, many of which can also be classed as sci-fi (but what is elaborate undiscovered science if not magic, and vise versa?): Sorry to Bother You
