I had been buying a bit too much coffee out as of late and I wanted to switch it up. I have an older nespresso machine and Laura sometimes makes cold brew (it’s a bit of a process), but neither were ready quick enough or were cutting it energy wise. So I bought a Krups 5-cup coffee maker for $25 on Amazon. It does literally only that - make coffee. I load it up with Chamberlain Coffee (which is also a definite recommend), pour in the water, close it and flip the switch. then I drink the entire pot and clean my whole apartment. Good stuff.

I have always been a no nonsense plain black coffee person. Having a comparatively simple drip machine with one button, with the classic, clean, and simple design of Braun makes the morning cup that much more enjoyable. Find one on eBay or at a garage sale.

I made the mistake of getting addicted to caffeine as a sophomore in high school, and my jobs as a barista over the years has only exacerbated this dependency. Now if I skip a morning cup, I experience Phineas Gage levels of a headache. With this whole COVID-19 thing, I had to get good at making my own coffee at home, and while I love me some undiluted cold brew concentrate, I do not need to tell any New Englander it is about to get hella chilly out. For hot coffee needs, I had purchased a Moka Pot a few years ago because I thought it looked cool and loved that you did not need to always be buying filters or pods to keep using it. My cups kept coming out tasting muddy though, so the thing has been taking a sabbatical in the back of my cupboard for years. The other week, however, I fell down a James Hoffman YouTube hole and was inspired enough by his very informative Moka Pot video to bring my girl back out into the light. I used some shamefully old pre ground beans and this cool looking thing still managed to turn out one very strong, delicious cup of coffee that I would pay real dollars for.

I am a woman of a certain age, and the ritual of waking up early in the morning and brewing a perfect pot of coffee, savoring every sip, and taking it all in is truly the best part of my day, hands down. I have had my Moccamaster for a little over a year now. I treated myself to the most gorgeous coffee maker in the land for Christmas in 2019. It’s not cheap, has literally zero bells and whistles, but is called “The Moccamaster”, comes in no less than 30 different colors, and makes the smoothest pot of coffee I have ever known. Add to cart!

Top Recs from @mintyfresh

about 3 months ago I made a bet (or like was challenged or something idk) with my dad to try and go 6 months without drinking any drinks with sugar in them. not anticipating how hard this would be (even for money) I agreed. around 3 months in and as someone who absolutely hated artificial sweeteners I have grown to at minimum tolerate and at most mildly enjoy sugar free drinks. my favorite is sugar free red bull, and I just had gatorade zero today. i also learned that most artificial sweeteners that are used (excluding a couple, like aspartame) have no documented adverse health effects. color me impressed. you win this round, science nerds.

So this is a drug I got from talking to my psychiatrist about reducing my drinking amount without fully quitting drinking (because I don’t want to). he prescribed me 50mg of Naltrexone and told me to take it daily for full effectiveness. Essentially what NAL does is suppress the dopamine you receive from drinking alcohol, curbing cravings and slowing consumption. it works by binding to opioid receptors. it is not an opioid, it is not addictive and it doesn’t cause withdrawal symptoms. best of all? It WORKS. Pretty fucking cool right?
