Today I witnessed a flock of little black cormorants (Phalacrocorax sulcirostris) in the ocean today fishing together. The social lives of animals, for me birds in particular, is such a joyous thing to witness. Its funny how competitive they are with one another, despite using fishing strategies that are enabled by team work.

Cormorants are a bird I think anyone can learn to recognize and appreciate! They are all over the place, they swim and then dry their wings off on rock together! And crucially to a novice birder, they're made of interesting, recognizable shapes which are easy to make out as they perform these distinctive behaviors. Apparently they have a bad reputation for being greedy because they eat so many fish for their size, and where's there's one cormorant there's another. But I'm no fisherman so I really don't mind at all! (And anyway, some fishermen in China have long taken advantage of this. They train cormorants to catch fish for them! The cormorants apparently even keep count of how much they bring in and will make a fuss if not properly compensated. Cormorants even unionize! What's not to love ♡𓅧♡)

something about seeing a big group of birds fly together in the late afternoon just makes me feel so at peace. it's always at sunset, and the way so many of them can fly in unison is so beautiful, its like a bird dance routine. like they're all gonna go find a place to camp out together and sleep for the night. maybe share a bird dinner and talk about their bird stories. wake up and continue their journey to somewhere warm. (I don't know much about birds)

Sometimes I recommend being a hater. I’m not here to talk about the numerous quality uses of AI, how often it is actually used nor am I here to critique AI without strawmanning it. I don’t care if I strawman an account of AI because I genuinely despise the way most people use AI. I think AI generated images are ugly. I think that AI cannot hold a half decent conversation. I’m completely avoidant when it comes to showing AI my writing; I’ve never done it and I refuse to. I hate when you go to that one poetry website and there is AI “analysis” there, because its not real textual analysis and it upholds a certain contextualised intentionalist framework of reading a text reinforced in high school English. I hate that the meta AI will influence what products will be advertised to you. I don’t care if it’s the future. I genuinely love being called a dinosaur because I hate AI.

When we let go of the fear we hold towards the smallest creatures of our environment, and learn how to immerse ourself in an instance of nature rather than making an instance of nature our own, we learn to truly be alive. Bugs are great because you can’t own them, but you can admire their beauty. #bugnation2024
