Staying at the Roxy in NY (formerly the Tribeca Grand) is akin to being on an elegant cruise in Manhattan. It’s my home away from home in the city. Everything is there: from live jazz in the massive atrium lobby with the glass elevator zipping up and down and the divine food and drinks (I recommend the lobster roll and a mescal cocktail) in recessed leather booths shaped like teacups, to the gorgeous red velvet theater below - which offers the best films on screen in Manhattan - curated by the brilliant Illyse Singer. After attending a killer film and fascinating Q&A, retreat to the Django, the speakeasy next door, which stays open til 4AM and is often where the hottest underground music acts play… What else could you ask for?

Made a WhatsApp group with all my film friends in it and have been using it coordinate going to screenings. It's so much fun! There's loads of little independent screenings happening where I live and some very good independent cinemas, but even if all you have is a TV you should start a film club too. This evening I'm off to an old pub that's been converted into an events space to watch The Garden by Derek Jarman 😎

If you’re an aspiring screenwriter I highly recommend doing a film challenge. It‘s fun and takes you out of ‘I haven’t written today, I don’t know how to write!’ anxiety brain and reminds you that you like movies for actual deep and personally fascinating reasons. It also is a great way to show you what your film taste is as you’ll see links in the films you pick each day. I attached a pic of one I made if you want to do it :)

Posting this only so people know the NYT games of wordle, connections and the mini crossword etc are FREE everyday. I think if you’re really good at the spelling bee and are going up past 30 points (and who is?) you have to be a paid subscriber, but you can get basic brain training every morning for FREE. Better than Wordscapes and no ads! Let’s all delay dementia together.

Every Valentine’s Day I ask everyone who follows me on Instagram their fave long song. Mine, for the record, is If I Were A Carpenter, the Four Tops version though Bob Dylan has a great cover with The Band. Recently I’ve been obsessed with Just Drifting by Psychic TV and think it’s one of the most romantic songs I’ve ever heard. Here is the responses I‘ve got: I Love You Honeybear - Father John Misty Just The Way You Are - Billy Joel This Guy‘s In Love With You - Faith No More Danger High Voltage - Electric Six Do You Realize - Flaming Lips Yard Of Blonde Girls - Inger Lorre Dolls In The Dark - Drab Majesty Surrender - Suicide Laid - James Love Song - The Cure Our Way To Fall - Yo La Tengo Maps - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
