I have an irrefutable habit of never choosing to accept a side, in any argument, ever. I have the ability to see the positives and drawbacks of each scenario. Itās helped me gain an array of experience and I seem to like that about myself!
I think thereās so much pressure to be thinking About everything at an extremely high level, to a point where no one can admit they donāt know enough about a topic to form their own opinion⦠this is not anti intellectualism, just i think the world would be a much more productive place if we could admit when maybe our opinions are baseless and could be more knowledgeable⦠also sometimes i just donāt careā¦
This is probably less of a choice and more of a personality defect. Itās ultimately an alienating and soul crushing way to live your life. But there is no way to be successful without being highly critical, at least as an editor. The danger is when you turn it on yourself and people you are close to (inevitable). In a culture where weāre sold blind positivity (profit motive), it's important to stay critical, to stay on your toes. As an editor this is most important. But itās also important to be an āA-typeā thinker instead of a āB-typeā thinker: you have to offer ways to improve what it is youāre criticizing, and not just be critical for the sake of criticizing.
