Yes the print is too big and there’s huge margins. Yes it looks like it’s from an airport. Yes maybe it’s about some random WW2 general. But how happy will they be when you’re able to tell them “ Yes I actually put the time into that thing you got for me “. And hell maybe you’ll even like the book. Beach reads have wide appeal for a reason. I did it and I don’t regret it I bet You won’t regret it.

I think a lot of people can find reading really intimidating because they feel they have to read the literary greats (which can be linguistically inaccessible), and while I believe those have tremendous value I also think they aren’t requirements. If you want to read exclusively romance, or YA fantasy, or murder mysteries, go for it. I think when we put parameters on what should or shouldn’t be read we make it feel like a chore or an assignment. But I think there is infinite value in your airport paperback as long as you are finding true enjoyment. Anyways this is basically a long winded way of saying, read what you want and don’t feel like you aren’t as good of a reader just because you aren’t reading Hemingway. P.S. this is my professional opinion as a real life librarian

I’ve enjoyed plenty of books that are good, but there’s something to be said about enjoying what may be dubbed a beach read. Lower effort books with straightforward, predictable plots. A small-coastal-town-with-wildfire-gossip read crammed with all the tropes you can think of. I find myself getting into grooves where I crush several of these books at a time. It’s like watching Gilmore Girls or an old rom-com, the fun is in the lighthearted romp, and you may find yourself craving to come back after a few months away.

Start small. I got back into reading this year by reading a lot of novellas and short story collections. No more than 200 pages long. It really felt like I was having to rewire my brain because I’d been out of practice with reading. Find a book that intrigues you (if you want to read graphic novels read graphic novels! you’ll get to your friend’s recs in time) and carry it with you everywhere you go. Then (and I know this sounds ridiculous) you just have to actively choose to read the book. I have to be like “ok we’re putting the phone away now and we are going to read 10 pages” sometimes I read more and sometimes I hit my quota and ditch the book for the day. I made a goodreads and you can set a reading goal challenge (which I’m now behind on) and that’s kinda fun.
