Sometimes people forget to take out the tack stitches in their jacket or skirt, so I offer to help remove.

I know how to sew the most basic stuff, like fixing a hole in a pants pocket or stitching a button back onto an old shirt. Knowing how to do this is handy. But I liberally take my clothes to one of the local seamstresses: Mary or Anna. A lot of my clothes have gotten new life that way. Six dollars here, 10 bucks there. Highlight: an expensive down jacket had a ruined zipper. For $12 I got a new, sturdy, bronze-colored replacement. I've also been wanting to see if Anna can do some mods: combine two old sweaters, etc., add elbow patches, etc.

A nice little venue hosts this once a month. People come with their clothes, help each other sew stuff, get a little cocktail. I thrifted this lovely cardigan 12+ years ago, and sadly 5 of 8 buttons had detached. I kept them for many years and tonight the piece was finally restored with some help from a pro-sewer (3 buttons) and my own efforts (2 buttons).

Editing clothing gets me away from digital neuroses and back into the material, unstitching and seeing how something is folded in on itself to function. I discovered this subtle little utensil long ago on a summer internship at a theater company in the Berkshires in the costume shop. I'd trade music recs with the ladies for time spent on the serger (ruining several great t-shirts ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I'd scored at a local thrift) but the seam ripper really stuck—and careful because it sure can: ouch! Without context, it's hard to place and intriguing; you find it in an dusty old a drawer wonder what it's used for. Itchy tag? Seam ripper. Dated collar? Seam ripper. Ugly hem? You get the idea. Seam ripper tattoo? Hmmm...

Want to wrap this app in love and care so it doesn’t become like Twitter.
this website is full of people recommending (mostly) great things, sharing ideas, and things they love. i logged onto twitter and immediately feel horrible so i switched tabs back to here (and yes i am using desktop!)

Written in the 70s, not released until 1982, this song holds up. It’s devastatingly sad, and impossibly beautiful.  Good morning, my darling, I'm telling you this To let you know that I'm sorry you're sick Though, tears of sorrow won't do you no good I'd be your doctor if only I could What do want from the liquor store? Something sour or something sweet? I'll buy you all that your belly can hold You can be sure you won't suffer no more I'd swim the ocean or the deepest canal To get to you, darling, just to make you well There's no place on Earth I wouldn't hasten to go To cool the fever, this I want you to know What do want from the liquor store? Something sour or something sweet? I'll buy you all that your belly can hold You can be sure you won't suffer no more
