It’s time to take inventory

I don’t have any degree and in another life I worked in restaurants and at CVS. Customers would grill me about my career aspirations and straight up beg me to go to college. I got sick of it pretty quickly and sat down and asked myself what I would want in a workplace and what skills I had that I could use to do something else. I had some freelance experience and used that to enter my current field and continued pursuing organic opportunities for growth and learning. About a year ago I started working at a company that prioritizes employee development and internal promotion and I’m in the process of gaining enough experience and connections to be able to do something new again! I definitely think it’s possible for people who don’t have a bachelor’s degree to find these opportunities; you just have to be strategic about it and get your foot in the door at the right places. There are so many transferable skills you gain in retail and food service that are beneficial in other professional fields like communication, multi-tasking, attention to detail, etc. So you can take those and add them to whatever skills you may have gained at your current job. Ask yourself what it is that you’re better at than anybody else, the things you would want and definitely not want in a workplace, the kind of tasks you like doing, and kind of guide your search from there. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking you’re lesser than others just because you have less formalized education than they do and remember that people hire likable people they want to be around—even that will take you far! best of luck! 🍀

BAGGING A PARKER POSEY PARTY GIRL JOB

last year i watched the 1995 classique that is daisy von scherler mayer’s party girl starring thee one and only parker posey. now this was a seismic moment for me, very ‘self recognition through the other’. it hit home with me at the time as i was fresh out of my undergrad, funemployed but without the fun (sustaining myself on depop sales, handmade tote bags, and making shitty posters for local bands), and routinely siphoning booze and weed from my boyfriend. i too like our protagonist faced some major housing instability and then had to sell off a lot of my hottest vintage finds literally just so i could cover minor expenses like my phone bill and my medication each month. i was in the trenches before i got my PPPGJ. for those unfamiliar with the film a parker posey party girl job is literally just a hot job in the culture/heritage/arts sector. one that comes into your life in the midst of crisis to rescue you from the woes of economic strife and jobless induced hedonism (and also preferably lets you dress up really chic whilst you’re on the clock). i bagged it like two weeks after id watched the movie, call it a divine sign. i got hired as a screen intern for this major museum, and got to work on putting together their film programme for 2025. it was totally pinch-me as far as arts jobs go. im based in england but up north.. anyone living outside of london will know that cool heritage gigs like this are few and far between when yr outside the capital and applying for them is like competing in the hunger games. anyways, above minimum wage, hybrid and super flexible, free film tickets, lax dress code, found my hodgepodge experience in event planning to be a thing of value, lots of field trips to other museums, free reign to do more or less whatever i wanted during the day as long as my work got done. surreal <3 i have now finished my tenure at the museum bar some one-off freelance projects im doing with them but just wanted to reflect upon how right place right time it was. for any unemployed grads looking for their thing i know its tough but dont give up! what u seek may just be around the corner … sending everyone on their job hunting journey rn strength and good luck <33

My job is always juicy

I can’t really share any specific details but I’m gasping and scandalized on a regular basis.  I will say that once I got to overhear an outlandishly wealthy person talking about geopolitics and investment outlooks several years before things relating to what they talked about popped off and it kind of broke my brain a little bit and made me feel skeptical of media narratives.  If I told you more I’d have to kill you 😔 Once I was pretty sure I uncovered an international sex trafficking ring related to a flop beauty pageant I had never heard of and fell down a Google search rabbit hole about it but I didn’t really do anything about it. In the course and scope of my employment I’ve heard about a lot of people being killed or grievously injured by motorcycle wrecks even with the proper protective equipment and precautions and defensive driving.  had their scalps ripped off and their leg bones rip through their skin etc so I would say don’t ride a motorcycle. In another life I worked as a hostess at a restaurant which was a job my (niche famous post-punk musician) boss made up for me because he was a client of my dad and liked the way I dressed/thought I was cool.   Because there was only one hostess people would often ask me if I was his wife or the wife of the chef and I always had to laugh.   My coworkers always asked me if I had OCD because I would regularly wash my hands according to food safety guidelines.  One of my coworkers (who had a tattoo in honor of our boss) had a nosebleed and left a long trail of blood all through the restaurant which I noticed and cleaned up.  He was so grateful that I did it like I did it as a personal favor to him but I was just mortified at the idea of customers seeing it.  I worked at a farmers market and after I left it was discovered that the farmers market manager had been embezzling money and she died not too long after because it turned out she had cancer… so maybe that’s why she did that.  This is another silly workplace story I shared on here recently about my job at a vintage costume rental shop combination antique bookstore combination dance studio.

Today i could watch a C-tier Fassbinder, or something Québecois, or Dirty Work dir. Bob Saget. You can have both structure and spontaneity you can have it all in this life
