sometimes my record collection feels like an albatross, taking up space in an already too small house, just so I could say “yeah I used to dj” to someone 14 years younger who probably knows more about music than me. I can’t get rid of them because i’ve been collecting for nearly 30 years (yes i’m ancient) but maybe we need a conscious uncoupling for the time being.

there is something so poetic about physically owning the media that you love. it is YOURS. not only does the collecting make for a great hobby, and playing on a turntable or radio just a more authentic listening experiencing, but it is an effective way to preserve and ENJOY media during an age when everything feels so fleeting. pictured is the shoebox i keep in my car that i switch out with different cds as my heart pleases.

i have ~ 200 records in my collection (started in 2016 bc there was a record store at the mall i worked at, really ramped up in 2020 bc a record store ~20 min away is where i’d go for my lockdown sanity walks when things opened up but were still 6ft + masks at all time) and i love everything about it; they’re larger form factor so they’re physically imposing on your space and catch the eye easily bc of the artwork. they’re the oldest physical media but have made a comeback as niche collectibles, so you could ostensibly have an original pressing sun ra and the new sexyyred in the same collection. you can get them for pennies at an estate sale, or thousands on resale markets. they feel as expansive as music itself in what a collection can look like and how you sourced the library of what you listen to only downside is you can’t burn vinyls the way you can cds or tapes :(

vinyl is too expensive now so ive been collecting cds, it’s nice to have cds because my car is old and I have a cd player so they actually do get used. I don’t listen to my vinyls much at all but they looked cool on my wall at my apartments. Glad I’m getting practical use out of the cds 🥹

apparel-ish? I started an apparel brand called Blood is the new Black when I was 23 (in 2004, i’m 42 now) the brand acted as an arts collective, i’d select several artists every season to add to the brand and would curate their submitted works into collections. distro ranged from beams (jp) colette (fr) selfridges (uk) all the way to pac sun, urban outfitters, zumiez in the states. during the 9 years I had the brand I also published zines, produced artist directed films, curated gallery shows etc. it was part of the indie sleaze era and you’d see folks like tegan and sara, michael pitt, britney spears, allison mosshart wearing the brand. somehow I pivoted to country music along the way and started a brand called midnight rider in 2013. i made licensed repop and vintage feeling tees for musicians and folks like willie nelson, townes van zandt, nudies rodeo tailors, john wayne, the judds, waylon jennings, zz top and so many others. I sold that brand last year! now I do licensing and merchandise for waylon jennings (so if you see waylon merch or collabs i’m the one behind it). I also spend my free time taking photos and i’m currently working on a book about grand national owners. id love to mentor folks who have or are starting their own businesses because i’ve learned a lot in the process both good and bad.

Cocteau Twins in 1993 or 1994 (with Luna opening) - I was in the 8th grade and my sister who was 14 years older than me took me. We saw Mazzy Star/JaMC and Depeche Mode the next year.
