amazing pintxo bar in san sebastián and one of the best places for tapas in spain, without hesitation. every pintxo is mouth-watering: veal cheek, rib kebab, entrecôte, oreja de cerdo, risotto with idiazábal cheese, you can’t miss. be indulgent with the cider and wine, red or white —it’s delicious and god is it cheap.

I just finished a short tour for my first book coming out in Spain, so that’s probably why I’m obsessed with the general Spanish lifestyle. Literally what could be better than sitting at one of these white-tiled little bars in late morning or late afternoon and having a little glass of vermouth and a toothpick with an olive, spicy pepper, and anchovy? The point isn’t to stay all day; no one is working on their laptop. It’s to spend the perfect half an hour, maybe adding a plate of patatas bravas and a cortado to help you stagger on with your day. (I also assume this is why everyone in Barcelona is always smoking: how else do you recalibrate your body chemistry after the various snacks, booze, and caffeine?)

Seasonal small plates menu inspired by Venetian Ciceti bacari , impeccable vibe and amazing drinks. Had ricotta gnocchi and pumpkin arancini and a negroni but the real win was the atmosphere nowhere else like it in Cardiff

my best friend, now that she studies in a film school in the cuban countryside, took up the hobby as there isn’t much to do over there. she frequently talks to me about it, the quiet thrill of it, and all of a sudden i find myself looking up, frowning at the branches. i recently told her, half in jest (we were visiting home for the holidays) “what if we drop everything, go to papua new guinea, film the birds of paradise?” and she, dead serious, responded: “hmm… à la les blank?” expect the doc anytime soon!
